Independent display using pci-e slots

Hi, I would like to know if I use 2 or more video cards on my motherboard (assuming that its got more than 2 pci-e), can they work independently?

Basically I dont want it to run in SLI mode.. I play games occassionaly but wont need to run them on both screen, its more for work purposes.. also having it run at 16x or 8x doesn't really concern me..

appreciate any suggestions and advices..
