Question Install new PSU (And GPU) in Optiplex 9020 mini tower

Hi,

So Im having a Dell Optiplex 9020 Mini Tower. i7 4790, 32gb ram, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD. I have installed a GTX 1050TI now, but thinking about to upgrade to something like GTX 1660 SUPER or some other card. The PSU in the system now are only 290W.

If I want to change the PSU, I saw that I need to buy an 8pin-to-24-pin-adapter. Like this one:

Is that all I need? Will any PSU work from there? The motherboard Dell is called 06X1TJ.

Is there any specific size I need to look at if buying a new PSU for this chassi? If so, can anyone give me some tips.
Im guessing a 500W or 600W will be enough.

And also, is it worth upgrading this PC with a new graphic card? Or am I better just opening my wallet to buy all new?

Thanks, so no other things needed after this? Just the adapter and a compatible PSU?

One more question, with the 24PIN. do I need to use the 4PIN for the CPU Voltage also?

@jojesa - If going any further with a 750W, (havent really descided yet which graphic card). Can you please give a tips for a PSU 750W also. Also I think your second link was broken?

Yes, you need a PSU and the 24-pin to 8-pin adapter.

The PSU comes with the 4-pin CPU power connector, so make sure to connected it to the motherboard. You might encounter a PSU with a 8-pin CPU connector instead of the 4-pin, don't worry it can be snapped in 2x 4-pins.

You do not need to go further than a 600W PSU, even a 550W unit has enough power to spare.
Just make sure to get a reliable unit, that it is compatible (it fits).
You could even get a semi-modular PSU, so you only connect the cables you will need.

I'd recommend against the EVGA. The later Corsair CX models are decent.

Honestly, a high quality 450W would be plenty for your system and your planned card. Say, for example, a Seasonic Focus or Prime, or one of the Corsair TX, RM, RMx, RMi, HX, HXi, AX or AXi units.

Thanks, I will check out the Corsair CX models, I do not know anything about all those models there, but will try to take a look if I can find something at a good price :)

Maybe this one will work? that one costs 70Euro in Sweden.

It will work, and is usable, though I'd personally be more comfortable with the TX model, or one of the Seasonics.

However, those two that I just mentioned would make more sense if you planned to carry them over to a new system when you eventually upgrade.

Some be quiet models are good, some are not - I wasn't able to find a definitive answer on this one.

However, I would advise against it. Reliable or not, when it's used, that, in theory, can bring up other potential problems.

The Power Supply is the one thing you want to be sure of. It is the life-blood of the rest of your system. A poor quality power supply can fail, and take out other expensive PC components with it. In the very worst cases, a low quality PSU that fails can cause a fire.

There are definitely other parts where I think cost and savings should be considered. The PSU, however, is the one where the price should be a secondary concern, and reliability and safety the primary concern.

First of all, sorry again for asking same questions.

I have now removed my HDD-cage here in my 9020 Mini Tower. Therefore Im asking again.

I am looking into buying a GTX 1660 SUPER. Without the cage the chassi is like this for me.
I am guessing that I can now choose which card I want? No need to ask myself if it will fit?

Which GTX 1660 SUPER is the best to put here? The reason now I want a Nvidia-card is because I bought a Nvidia Shield yesterday. If the front panel (USB in front and mic?) is someway affected. I can live with them being unplugged. I do not use them as much anyway. (I can use the ones in the back of the chassi instead)

I have not yet installed the PSU, but will do it before connecting the GPU, also I have the adapter.

That's going to be a tough question to answer for anyone who doesn't own a 9020 MiniTower.

Best bet is to take careful measurements, then look at the size specifications of the 1660 SUPER cards you wish to consider, keeping an eye out for any possible interference with parts of the case, and the PCIe connector(s).

That's the right way to measure for a GPU on that case.
You have 40cm / 15" inches in length. You can fit pretty much any GPU.
Any GTX 1660 SUPER will fit, since they are below 28"cm/11" inches long. Most of them are around 9" in length.
Gigabyte makes the longest one with 3-fan setup.

Thanks, so no card is to big in depth either? Im guessing that longer cards may cause trouble to the front panel cord and the speaker cord.

I did move the SSD SATA cable from SATA 0 to SATA 2 instead. Dont know if that will make something worse?

I dont know what that black cable does (above the little round internal speaker). Is that only for protection against static electricity or something?

I would still buy the Amazon adapter even if you've already purchased the Aliexpress. Aliexpress is not where you shop for safety critical parts such as this. Do you really want electricity flowing through your PC using wiring that was the absolute cheapest price some random factory in Guangdong was willing to churn them out at?

I will check it out, it will take serveral weeks and another 30USD to get a new adapter here. But you are right, I did assume that theese kind of parts where cheap parts from the beginning and anyone would do the job.

I did find one in Sweden for 20USD, maybe that one would be better

Update,
I just bought this:
GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 OC 6G
Cooler Master MWE Gold 550 Full modular

I will take the 24pin-8pin-adapter to my workplace and measure it, and I will also plug it into a similar computer first with the PSU and try it there. If it works I will use it in my own computer and put the GPU in there.
