where is it promting you with this message? during POST or when on your windows desktop?

have you had any other problems with the laptop before this started happening?

system slowing down or freezing? strange or unusual noises?

yeh, slowed down, then froze. so i thought i'd do a clean boot. worked for a while then started again. now i'm attempting another clean boot and getting the error can't install because the disk soon fail... when i ignore that it reaches the point of expanding windows files, goes some % but says can't find file source/ and other stuff...

There is no way to determine how long a part will last , sometimes you buy something new and it arives DOA and other times something will last for years , there's just no way to tell. Since your laptop is only 6 months old then the hdd will be under warranty so you should contact the manufacturer for a RMA and get a new hdd.

Make sure that it is SMART or SMART enabled software that is telling you this.
There are tons of viruses out there which will try to make you think you need new hardware, or that they have a fix for you... if you buy something. Not saying that it is not a hardware failure, just be sure that it is not something else.

If 6 months old it is likely under warranty. These things happen, contact the manufacturer and they ought to be able to replace it with no problem. Just be sure to back up any personal data first as it will be gone.
