Installed new GPU and recommended resolutin is 3840 x 2160 but keeps going back to 1920x1080

I just installed MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti [1] replacing [ASUS GeForce 9500 GT][2]

I know the new card can run 4k and my display is a 4k tv.

When I try to change the screen resolution to the recommended setting 3840 X 2160 and press apply okay. It states the resolution is 3840 X 2160, but when I go back to my screen resolution setting I see my resolution is back to 1920 x 1080.

I also went to Nvidia Control Panel and try to change the resolution to 4k x 2k, 3840 x 2160 (native) the screen goes black and reappears and res. setting is still 1080p, 1920 x 1080

Not sure why I can't seem to make my computer to display in 4k.

What type of cable are you using?

An hdmi cable

That won't work. The cable can't push enough data for 4k

For what I read HDMI cables can support 4k or why would they be used on 4k hd tv

Guess I should have been more specific. It requires HDMI 2.0 or higher to use 4k check exactly what cable you have
