Installing HDD to DVR

I tried to install a 2TD HDD to a DVR I'm using for CCTV and when I tried to switch it on, the DVR didn't power up and I got a smell of burning plastic.

I connected it to the two ports you see at the top of this picture.

I can't see any other ports, so what went wrong?

That black port is a normal SATA port, the other one next to it looks like a 4 PIN fan header but it could have been easily repurposed to spinning a HDD since the voltages are the same, in the end it is just a plug. Was the old HDD plugged into those?

No, I didn't order a HDD with the DVR. I'm using one from my computer. Someone here helped my pick out the parts nearly 3 years ago: http://

I've since upgraded my HDD to a larger one and bought a satellite receiver box. When I tried to install the HDD into the satellite receiver, I dropped the HDD on the motherboard and damaged some components. I brought the box the a place the repairs electronic equipment and they installed the HDD for me, but I never figured out how the record live TV, so I decided I'll use it for a IP camera DVR which I bought last week

Am I correct in understanding you used the cables from the satellite box for your DVR?
The blue cable (SATA) is a normal cable, the power cable sounds like it isn't the right one for your DVR, and you may have shorted out the DVR and the 2TB HDD.
