installing os 8.1

Hi guys I have a question that I hope I can get an answer for. I recently bought a prebuilt PC and I accidentally broke off the gold connector pin off of my hard disk trying to install a new PSU. I called the manufacturer to see if I could get a replacement HDD with is included but they told me that I have to buy a new hdd and a new os and it will work. I've never tried this before so I want to know if anyone has tried this or know if this will work before I decide to proceed to buy by the hardware and software. My os was windows 8.1.

You don't need to buy a new OS if the motherboard is the same, just follow the instructions at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

You DO need to replace the hard disk though
