Question Integrated 4gb RAM + 16gb RAM

I purchased a new laptop which I intend to use for software development. It came as advertised with 8gb of RAM, so I purchased a stick of 16gb to replace it with.

When opening the laptop I realise that 4gb is integrated and 4gb is removable so I replaced the removable memory with the 16gb.

The laptop has started fine and within System it shows that I have 20gb of memory.

Is there any cons in doing what I did?

The only con will be the memory will revert to the slowest memory on board. So if the integrated memory is the slowest that is what all memory will run at. So if you bought faster ram than the integrated ram you will not be getting your moneys worth.

Plus - ram will run in either single channel or flex channel mode (lowered performance). Dual channel mode is unavailable in 4GB+16GB configuration.

I would download cpuid/cpu-z https://www.cpuid.com/ and go to memory tab and see what speeds are reported for the integrated ram.

Just checked, it only gives me information on my removable memory, not the integrated...:/

Yes, Slot #1 shows the details for the 16gb stick. Slot #2 everything is a grey empty box.

That makes sense since it is only reading your memory slot.

Under the memory tab the only bit that has any data in is size: 20 GBytes

looks like it's working. my stupid A6 based notebook has 2 slots, however, one just dangles and is not usable. it shows 20, which is correct. you should be ok for dev and vms
