Nice Played bro! Now your getting F*** good call... is Intel that afraid? I never noticed AMD until last month when i was looking for an Upgrade and well.. Intel was ripping my pockets, OH! wait i know why i didn't noticed.. that was Intel's plan! wow now i get it (jaja lame i know im bored ;( )

[citation][nom]sonofliberty08[/nom]they not just giving discount , they give sponsor to every intel-only computer shop , that's why i hate to work for the intel-only shop .[/citation]
I noticed that too last year (well almost 2 years ago).
A local computer retail chain store was carrying mostly Intel and they only had a very few AMD CPU's available. When I inquired about a AMD CPU the salesman tried to persuade me into getting an Intel system.
5 years before the same store had both brands pretty much equally.
That's the time when I first got my components from newegg instead.
I have built Intel systems in the past but I did note the Intel only attitude at those shops.

This type of crap is what the convicted monopolist Microsoft is good at too but in other ways. They, big corporations get very inventive in destroying their competition.

Hasn't Intel been sued, fined, and slapped on the wrist for years now for anti-competitive practices? Intel sounds like a big dumb baby that gives AMD shit, and yet they can't take AMD's own shit. You have to walk the walk if you're going to talk the talk. And clearly these fines haven't taught Intel any lesson. Prosecutors need to do more to really teach Intel a damn good lesson, Intel needs a slap on the butt for every dollar given out as a rebate.

Intel:
"buy one get one free, we make so much money out of the stupid consumers that we can afford to pay you to sell our chips!!!"

Wake up and smell the coffee!!!
You, the fan boys, are the ones getting screwed, not just AMD. You paid for these "incentives"

I'd see more wrong in it if AMD wasn't the only competitor.

I don't see how this is any different than Intel offering bundle deals.

A company will go with a product that costs them less while still making their customers just as happy.

They had 2 options, Intel and AMD. AMD obviously couldn't afford to give as good of deals as Intel.

Now I do see some wrong considering Intel is doing this as a way to advertise their CPU by nearly forcing the largest computer manufacture to use their CPU.

But if you think about it, all they are doing is offering a better deal than AMD. It's not like they are actually PAYING them, they are just giving them a better deal. Since when are BUNDLE DISCOUNTS illegal?

ANY company is going to try and offer better deals than the competitor to keep the interest of the consumer. Even if the company is making the deals to only a specific vendor.

Then again, they are getting sued for it.

Either way, those who are claiming people are 'intel fanboys' get your head out of your asses people.

This really isn't that unusual in the electronics industry. New York is going to have to prove that Intel was providing rebates to PC manufacturers specifically for not buying AMD chips; there's nothing wrong with Intel providing rebates to PC manufacturers for buying Intel chips, regardless of how suggestive such rebates may be. I'm sure Intel will settle out of court, change a couple of words around in their rebate program, and that will be that.

So this is more like DirectTV paying the NFL 6 billion for exclusive rights to their games, with a very specific few exempted?

Ok, it's not, but I hate that too..

[citation][nom]Raidur[/nom]It's not like they are actually PAYING them, they are just giving them a better deal. Since when are BUNDLE DISCOUNTS illegal?[/citation]

When the "better deal" pays 116% of your net income, I'd say they were indeed paying them for the exclusivity, or at least subsidizing them to a huge extent.

How that's illegal I don't know, exclusivity agreements aren't new or unusual, though I do recall similar complaints about Microsoft when Dell moved away from Linux.

When I had my store, I'd have dropped the Athlons in a second if Intel had offered me huge incentives to push their Pentium 3's. Just saying.

[citation][nom]homrqt[/nom]Wait, I don't get it. One company can't use incentives to gain another company's business??[/citation]

My guess is no when the competition is a fraction of the size of you.

Considering though that Intel is so large, even if AMD did the same thing only Intel would get in trouble since they are so big.

[citation][nom]john241w[/nom]Finally! now all those idiots that were pissed off at the EU for fining intel and ranted all their patriotic american crap can see that it's not the EU who is the problem but intel.[/citation]
Doesn't explain why the EU is so adimant against MS for free built in programs but doesn't go after Apple for Quicktime and their format that can only be played on Quicktime Player.

Maybe Apple doesn't make enough money......

I always knew of Intel doing such activities, Coz they have been making Crap until C2D's and so on, thereafter the OEM's shipped machines using those crap CPU's Shame on you Intel and you OEM's too, If this won't have been done by Intel I bet AMD does'nt need to sell all their manufacturing sites to ATIC.

I would say Intel is following its saying "Intel Inside" and thinking "Idiot Outside" like as Intel chip in every computer and we customers are Idiots to purchase them.

[citation][nom]itakou[/nom]Isn't this the same as how we see certain stores (movie theaters, schools, malls) only selling coke, while others only sell pepsi? The soda companies use similar practices and have contracts for stores to only sell their products.[/citation]

Does it make this terrible practice any better for the consumer?

[citation][nom]sqhacker[/nom]to be honest with you as bad as their business practices are, intel still holds a strong chip, now if their plan was to take out AMD's knees from under them when they had superior chips thats kinda cheap but why doesnt anyone blame the huge orginazations for their sleezy dealings with intel as well? "hey dell here is 1.2 billion a year to go with us" i'da done it too...[/citation]
Now, to be honest and know what you are talking about:

For more than one year, AMD had VASTLY SUPERIOR products that it was selling for LOWER PRICE than Intel, yet it didn't manage to gain any significant market share from that. You see? Better product, better price, same market share, does that make sense to you?

And regarding todays situation, who cares about top models? A few percent of consumers? AMD is still better value in mid/low segments.

People cant tell the difference between incentives and Bribe

Its really said ...

I've been an AMD Fan since K6 days. ahh. Good old times :)

Dual Athlon FX-74 from 3 yrs ago still kicking! Soon will switch to Opteron !

[citation][nom]nforce4max[/nom]That explains the flood of Pentium4s that so saturated the PC market and is impossible to avoid unless you only work on macs.[/citation]

Actually, Dell used to be Pentium exclusive (meaning you couldn't get a Dell with a Celeron) long before 2002. They didn't start offering AMD processors until 2006, which would be during a time these payments were still coming in.

What's amusing is that in the consumer market, Dell recently stopped selling AMD based machines online. These units are now available exclusively in retail outlets.

Intel deserves a swift kick in the nads and the CEO exec's should spend time with bubba in prison. AMD deserves some kick back for the loss of sales and preventing them from growing. hardy har har Untel got egg errr something on da face!! quick take a pic! hee hee.

This probably would have stayed under the radar for many years to come if not for a major global recession which Intel went from 75-80% market share to well over 90% in less than a year (and the wrong year to boot, 2007-2008). Here we are in 2009 and chip prices have virtually stagnated or been raised ALL YEAR! I'm surprised that Intel couldn't just give the 6 Billion in cost savings TO THE CONSUMER intead of the corporations! Now everyone who bought Intel's processors will be due a rebate once, erhm I mean if the case is won (no easy task). In years past, it was traditional to see a 3-5% decline in processor pricing between June and October/November(ish).. no such luck today.. and this is one of the reasons why.

If one were to look back in history.. the US gov't constantly warned intel that if they played dirty against AMD, that they would be punished and pimp slapped Microsoft with anti-trust to serve as warning (to Intel). Large corporation's irrational greed against the consumer as nurtured by our last President of The United States must swing back in favor of consumers-- stop the f-ing madness already!!! I want to buy an intel processor.. but not at these prices, I'm waiting until next year when Intel makes it clear that 775 is out and 1156/13xx are IN and prices come down to compensate!

This is nothing new.

I'm just curious what they did with the xtra 6 billion dollars? They should have bought out Intel! Imagine DelTel Chips.

bill gates is your daddy "Good Lord people. This isn't some whimpy "buy 2 get 1 free" deal. This is 'buy one, don't buy AMD, receive $6 billion dollars'"

Herbert_HA: "I believe the problem is not that Intel was giving discounts, but that they were giving discounts IF the seller wouldn't sell AMD computers, keeping them out of the market."

It's amazing how many people are making comments like "bill gates is your daddy" and "Herbert_HA" showing clearly how wrong Intel is, that people keep trying to defend Intel, just simply amazing.

DUH!!! Anyone who has worked for any one of these companies knows this and the details behind all of it. The discounts are for having a greater percentage of your stocked products over the other guys, and it is always a very high number. I know first hand and I have always wondered when it would come back to bite them.

I Like Intel, so I am not bashing them. I just know the truth...

I have even been at an Intel partner party where the details were "we are now officially a "certified partner" because we now stock 75%+ of Intel chips and motherboards which also gives us a discount of $XXX.XXX on all items we order and carry, as well as other benefits!" The "Other" benefits were not mentioned at this celebration.

Again, I like Intel but they really did try to corner the market. They did not want to kill the competition because that would look bad, but they want to be sure that they have the mass majority of the market. The benefits are many; One, they can say to the general population that they are the best and most popular processor company in the world. Two, that there is still "competition" out there to keep the wolves away. Three, the first two will cause a buying spree of mostly their products. Four, keep market share and company stocks high. Five, Dell, HP, etc all get a big slice of the pie and who does not want that! ETC...

The positives: Intel does have some of the best chips in the world. This is due to the heavy influx of money going to research/development and such. They treat and pay their employees well. They take care of their customers. Intel has a lot of community outreach and programs that help the needy and charities. many other things.

apparently, I was one of the lucky to buy an amd based dell back in '06.
the truth is, there weren't any options to get a nice, powerful, w/ dedicated graphics, laptop from dell those days..

it's sad that the EU was on top of this way before the US government (and the Intel's headquarters are located IN the US). i hope this story makes people who derail against the EU for going on a "US-company witch hunt" think twice before making that claim again.

anyway, from this article on CNN, there's some interesting evidence for the State of New York's case:

The suit claims that some of Intel's illegal practices included paying Dell almost $2 billion in "rebates," threatening to cut off development of an HP server if the company promoted a competitor's products, and paying IBM $130 million not to launch a rival's server.

Many of the alleged deals included references to Intel's main rival, Advanced Micro Devices. (AMD, Fortune 500)

According to Cuomo's statement, a January 2005 email from a IBM executive said: "I understand the point about the accounts wanting a full AMD portfolio. The question is, can we afford to accept the wrath of Intel...?"

An internal Dell email in February 2004 said Intel was "prepared for jihad if Dell joins the AMD exodus. We get ZERO [rebates] for at least one quarter while Intel 'investigates the details.'"

Cuomo said Intel "attempted to erase the most obvious traces" of illegal activity "by camouflaging language" in written correspondence.

A 2006 Internal email from an Intel executive said: "Let's talk more on the phone as it's so difficult for me to write or explain without considering anti-trust [sic] issue."
