Every few years I jump in and build myself a new system. For a while I built the fastest I could and had multiple machines running climate change until I saw I was spending ~$40/mo per macine. Well, now its come time to build again and here I am trying to catch up on the tech. Your review has been super helpful. It is evident that the market also sees the demand for the 3930K as stock is essentially nothing (newegg, directron, microcenter) and nobody shows it for the upper 5's. Amazon shows stock for nearly $700... yikes. Now if I could find articles as good for memory and MoB's I'd be set.

when comparing the 3820 to the 2600k, you also have to bear in mind that it has some other advantages like PCIe 3.0 and Quad Channel Memory support, so the raw speed of the CPU itself isn't the only factor to take on board

Neither of those features offer material benefits to performance in desktop applications that we've been able to demonstrate. Buying the -3820 makes the least sense of any Core i7-3000-series CPU.

Right now, 3820 is cheaper than 2600k, so buying obsolete 2600k is no longer reasonable. Even mobos on lga2011 are on the same price tag.

i'm building a system around the 3930, it will be my most expensive processor to date by a clear £200, so i'm looking at every review, benchmark, comparison and head to head i can find.

one man's opinion is never enough.

Two questions. Are you saying that it is safe to run this chip at up to 80C long term without danger to the chip?
I use the ASUS X79 MB. Have you seen an Would you suggest a similar Intel Burn test on the X79 for maximum wattage to use long term?
