What is the best processor available in the market that will enhance performance with a Gigabyte motherboard GA-G31M-ES2L enhanced with a NVIDIA 9400GT?

Will an I5 or I7 processor be compatible with it?

No, you have to stick with the core 2 quad and core 2 duo CPUs, i5 and i7 on a different socket.
Best CPU for that socket price wise would be the e7500 i would guess

For that socket, I would say the best upgrade would be the pentium E6000 series (dual core), or Q9400 (quad core), I don't think that ant of the core 2 duo models is worth its price anymore.

According to Gigabytes CPU support list for GA-G31M-ES2L you can use pretty much all Core 2 CPUs, however, going for the best would cost more than getting a new system, that is if you can even find one available.
