Hi all, i am a little concerned.

Recently started fiddling around msi Afterburn and noticed that my cpu temp goes up to 90 degree celsius under high load and 48-57 degrees in idle mode (just browsing the web with spotify and mumble up)

Read a few threads posted here and thought maybe i just need to..
1. Blow air into the fan to clear the dust
2. replace stock cpu fan
3. Replace stock thermal paste

Be awesome if i could get some tips on whether the above is a normal temperature, and if not.. what should i do.

Thanks heaps!

Solution

yes, this will improve temperatures by miles over the stock intel heatsink which is pretty bad

and msi afterburner is a gpu overclocking program not a cpu overclocking program.
Thank you for the feedback. Unfortunately .. i am pretty clueless when it comes to cpu , ive done some simple ram/hdd/ssd/gpu changes but .. dont know much about cpu.

What's a aftermarket heatsink ?

and .. is this the 212 evo you mentioned http://www.coolermaster.com/cooling/cpu-air-cooler/hyper-212-evo/

MSI afterburner displays per-core CPU temps. It is a good program for this.

@rhezner
Ahh.. dont get me wrong i am not trying to overclock my cpu, i was trying to overclock my gpu and then saw these data and got a little worried.

@tiny voices
i will definitely take a look at the heatsink installation, is there anywhere i can look at to ensure its properly installed?

should i still get some thermalpaste and replace it over the stock ones either way?

Yo could try new paste, but MAKE SURE you completely clean off the old paste and install new paste PROPERLY. People generally mess this up and either don't fix the issue or make it worse. Make sure you know what you are doing.

Take a visual look at the cooler. Is the fan spinning? Is the fan connected to the CPU_FAN header on the motherboard? Grab the cooler, can you move it around? Or is it attached firmly?

The temperatures you've posted look high for idle (but about right for load with the stock cooler). One question though - what is your ambient (room) temperature? (obviously this will influence your idle temperature)

I would second looking at the 212 EVO as a replacement cooler - it's cheap and should provide lower temperatures and be quieter than the stock cooler.

No one said it wasn't. BUT if OP can get his cooler working properly (clearly isn't working correctly right now) and the temps in check, why waste money on something he doesn't need?

this is before i opened up the pc to check, ive just booted up the pc before i went to work, note that this is after 7 hrs where pc is off

The results,
I booted straight into bios, to check the cpu temp and its already at around 45 degrees.

Then went into windows to check on msi afterburn the temp still stayed the same. I waited for bout 3 mins(didnt have much time)

Thought i should maybe mention that this pc was built late 2013 ard nov.

*Update*
May not be able to find the evo 212 in local stores here, and amazon takes bout 2-3 weeks to arrive where i stay.

however i could possibly get a

Thermaltake Frio Air Cooler for a decent price , how's that in comparison to the Evo212?
