I have a old Intel Mother Board MS440GX that will utilize dual processors with a VRM, can anyone tell me the correct VRM number it takes. Is this it VRM FRU 36L8847

That voltage regulator appears to be for a PIII 550/512K Xeon processor. Is that what you plan to use? If not, what processors do you plan to use?

Right now I have PII 450, but am planning to purchase the PIII 550...So I guess my question is for both if I was to use the PII as a dual or use the PIII as a dual. I got no help from Intel. I was trying to purchase two PIII's on ebay and they listed the VRM as a 36L8847

OK, I see zenmaster's point. I use A64 based processors myself. A single core Sempron probably would be faster (and you get the motherboard).
But, I understand your interest in the dual Intel system. I once built a dual Socket370 PIII system. Sometimes its just fun to complete a project (and the Slot2 processors you're looking at are cheap).
Let me see what I can find on the 450 PII's VRM.

Listed VRM for a Xeon PII w/ 512k cache is VRM-01K7371. All PII Xeons regardless of cache size appear to require 2.0V for the processor and 2.7V for the cache. Therefore all probably work with this VRM.

I understand what your saying, it would seem and is throwing away money for old crap but its a hobbie, I picked up a old work station and just want to play. I dont need the computer just want to see if I can make it work . So my next question is will this motherboard run the PIII 500's and are the PIII's any better than the PII's. The next thing where other than Ebay can you buy VRM's???

Thanks

Yes, with the correct VRM module this motherboard appears to be able to handle up to 550MHz processors. The main difference between the PII and The PIII Xeon (other than clock speed) is the inclusion of SSE instructions in the PIII.

BTW - Some vendors include VRM with PII and PIII processor. Other than those, Ebay is a good source and Googling the VRM # often provides alternate sources.
