Hello everybody,
I am kinda new at this not really.
I have a Intel® Pentium® Processor E2180 (1M Cache, 2.00 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) - intel website (http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=31733).

I am thinking of replacing my current processor with either a Duo or a Quad core, but I have been going through forums and topics like this are a bit outdated. But what I want to know is that would it be smarter to go Duo? or Quad? and do the extra cores do anything to "expand" preformance? like do the extra cores/threads multiply the max GHz or does it stay the same.
example:
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8300
(6M Cache, 2.83 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)

Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9505S
(6M Cache, 2.83 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)

do the extra cores/threads of the quad out "GHz" the duo?
Looking for the best performance in gaming and non-gaming. 😀
-I am a Gamer

OH and I think I need more RAM right???? :heink:

Specs:
Acer Aspire M1641 with a Nvidia MCP73 motherboard *LGA 775
Nvidia Geforce 9500 gt
Corsair 430 watt PSU
2GB RAM
(only experience of MODing PC's replacing Graphics card) 😗

Definitley the Pentium E6600 would be worth trying out for that price
as long as the OP can return it if it doesnt work

the performance increase for the $75 would be nice

also upgrade the card from the 9500gt to a HD 5770 or HD 5670
depending on the PSU

or a GTX 450 or GTX 250 (keep those Nvidia fans happy :) )

The E6700 on the nvidia list is the Core2Duo E6700 which
is different from the Pentium E6700 (if that is what you are referring to)

the Core2Duo E6700 would be the safest bet
the most compatible
almost definitley would work
the Pentium E6600 would be faster
but bigger chance it wouldnt work

Me personally I would go with the Core2Duo E6700
or if cheap enough go with a X6800 which are both Conroes
(the Pentium E6600 is a Wolfdale)
since the difference in speed is not dramatic
and the Conroe Core2Duos would be the most compatible

Yes king that is what I ment about the e6700. But I would like to get the pentium e6700/e6600 is soo much cheaper! buy a lot!
Besides Tigerdirect and new egg don't sell them anymore, and they would sell them cheap! ><
I also checked the other brands other than (wolfdale/conroe) on tigerdirect and new egg, non-existant there ><

But what got me thinking now is that my current processor is not listed on the compatibility list as well dual core e2180

I think I will settle with the pentium e6700, it seems to be compatible but who knows >< Unless someone who actually knows if it won't work XD

I tried doing a Google search and Toms search on your model number and CPU
and I didnt find anybody swapping out
CPUs
so the best bet is use the seller with the best return policy
and try the Pentium E6600/E6700
If it works then it is a really nice upgrade
and if it doesnt then you arent worse off than before

Abondon ship.... if you can't afford A new i3 chip and board look at a 3 or 4 care athlon 2 if you don't overclock the you could buy the ram board and chip for 160 bucks

it seems like a much better path then investing into the machine you ar currently running, and for the record a C2Q still faster than an equaly clocked P2 but I will agree it isn't worth the price........

To quote the OP
"yeah well I dont want to replace my motherboard right now. Don't want to reinstall everything. and yes I am cheap like that, I am a student and with no job ATM so yeah go figure "

You are right spenshells BUT the OP doesnt want to change out mobo and cpu
He has a tight budget and the Pentium E6700
which is $85 with free shipping on Newegg
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116370
is alot cheaper than new CPU/Mobo
if you look here
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-gaming-cpu,2951-2.html
the E6800 still gets a honorable mention in Toms CPU guide
and the E6700 is only a little slower

If his budget is under a $100 then that is his best option
really there is no option even between $100-$150 for mobo/cpu
that could outperform the E6700

also remember he is using a Acer OEM tower
so swapping in mobo and cpu into that would probably be tough
so he is looking at a case too

I have a Core2Duo 3.0ghz and I want to switch to the X 3 Rana 455
myself
but in his position if his budget is under a $100
than the Pentium E6xxx series is his best option

Dude spent, just by looking at how you are "talking" I seem to find that you are only talking about your opinion, lol.

Besides I have a intel pentium 2180, and the one that I am going to get is the intel pentium e6700 its the same intel model just hope it works ><.

Also I overlooked the part where Nvidia made the motherboard lol, I just sent a message to them. Acer has a really crappy support system ><

if your only experience is changing a graphics card, then bear in mind that changing a CPU is a bit more complicated.

You have to remove the existing heatsink/fan, which can be a bit complicated, depending on the fastening method. Then you have to open the socket and extract the existing CPU; not particularly difficult, but you want to be careful not to damage it in case you have to put it back. Next, put the new CPU into the socket (be careful to put it the right way around!) - be careful not to zap it with static. Close the socket. Apply thermal paste (this is a complicated subject - you should look it up). Reinstall the heatsink / fan after cleaning any old thermal interface material from it. Don't forget to plug the fan back in.

Not saying you can't do it, just saying it's a bit more complicated than plugging in a graphics card.

hehe well I read stuff on how to replace the processor way before creating this thread ><.

I think I figured out why the Pentium e6700 wouldn't work on my MOBO since it uses a 2 MB Intel® Smart Cache, where my currect processor is using a L2 cache. I think that is why it isn't compatible, right? please tell me I am wrong XD XD

OH also regarding my RAM I am going to get would there be a problem is I were to get a PC6400, where I am currently using a PC2-5300 (333MHz)??
In the case it does cause a problem getting this http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3128122&CatId=3409
than:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4631346&CatId=3412&SRCCODE=LINKSHARE&cm_mmc_o=-ddCjC1bELltzywCjC-d2CjCdwwp&AffiliateID=TnL5HPStwNw-HXIyja78Hg4Iz0Ykas0jbQ
Would be better right?

I have also found my PC full model number and everything (not the MOBO ><) hopefully this will give you more info, http://www99.epinions.com/Acer_Aspire_AM1641_U1521A_Desktop_Computer/display_~full_specs

my computer is way faster than yours and it always will be so there 😛

Question Bump =.=

the cache wouldnt make a difference
without knowing mobo specifics you have to go by chipset
which is a Nvidia 620i which in the CPU support list
a wolfdale 45nm 65watt 1066mhz is supported
the Pentium E6700 is a 45nm 65watt 1066mhz
so "theoritically" it should work

you wont really know until you take the chance and
try it :)

make sure you have a good return policy
make sure you update BIOS if possible BEFORE installing CPU
also clear the CMOS by removing mobo battery for a minute then reinstalling
before CPU swap

If want a safer bet go with a E4xxx series
that is a 65nm 65watt 800mhz FSB Core2Duo
they are cheap on EBAY used
I just saw a E4600 for $44 free shipping

I have a E4500 which I OC to 3.0ghz
It scores 6.3 on Win7 WEI which is reasonable (highest is 7.9)

I personally would take the chance on the Pentium E6xxx
if it works it is a heck of an upgrade over what you have now

Also regarding my RAM I am going to get would there be a problem is I were to get a PC6400, where I am currently using a PC2-5300 (333MHz)??

Question bump again lol XD

Thanks King for helping me though this ><

I don't know that it's worth it to get a new minor CPU upgrade and RAM. You can just do something like this build, which is leaps and bounds better and you can upgrade it to an i5 2400 quad core easy.

BIOSTAR H61ML LGA 1155 Intel H61 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard $60

Concerning the BIOs I couldn't find any update for my OS Windows 7. Nvidia suggested that I were to update my BIOs to be able to recognize E6700. Hopefully Windows 7 already has the correct BIOs for e6700, if not HELP????
