[citation][nom]dogman_1234[/nom]Why don't they lower CPU prices to aid the consumer?Really, IMHO, if I were an engineer, I would be happy with my 60,000 dollars a year salary.[/citation]
Yes, the poor children that only can get low end dual cores really need our support.

Do you really think they only make that much a year?

Intel lowers their prices every 6 months or so. If you took their bonus money and divided it by number of processors they sold, you may have a penny discount coming to you.

A decent engineer right out of college makes 60K. Engineers that lead the R&D for Intel's flagship money-makers pull in 250K plus. So if YOU were an engineer you would want more money, because your school loans are about 100K these days.

no you wouldn't

Intel is awesome, unlike Wall Street businesses these guys actually contribute to society with their excellent products. I just wish they had competition worthy of them. Instead they have AMD...

Paying more gets you the best engineers, and allows you to produce better CPUs that are cheaper to produce. Paying them 5% less, on the other hand, is a drop in the ocean and achieves nothing.

Lucky them, especially the guy who said his bonus is 17 days of pay!

I'd go all out with that pay and stick it in a BANK!
HA! you didn't expect me to say that!

To make you feel worse..that's the average starting salary. 10 years+ experience you're in 6 figures and maybe max out 20 years later in the 120k range. Intel probably pays way above average given you don't do anything important unless you have a PhD.

60k is a pretty low salary for an engineer. Certainly not enough to attract or keep the really good engineers.

Wow. How many things silly things can you say in 30 words or less?

My IQ dropped just by reading your comment...

[citation][nom]stardude82[/nom]~$200 bucks for a high end CPU is very reasonable. Just look at these historic prices for 2004 when AMD was in the lead.[/citation]

And how about intel's $999 hexa core?

Capitalism at its finest and good job Intel. They make products people and industry want and the stock holders as well as the employees are rewarded. Cheaper prices is redistributive of company wealth and is a stupid socialist idea. If you don't like it stay with your Pentium II and shut up.

[citation][nom]Nintendork[/nom]killerclick You pay more for the same performance, if that's contributing to society...[/citation]

Actually the top of the line AMD CPUs are of similar performance to equivalently priced Intel CPUs. i5-2500K is the same price as Phenom II 1090T but beats it in every single benchmark, overclocks better and has lower power consumption as well (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=203).
The "old" i5-750 beats a similarly priced (difference of $15) Phenom II 970, uses less power and overclocks better. So it's 8% more money for 10% more performance (before overclock), that's fair isn't it?

Also, here is the big thing: if you need anything faster than Phenom II X6 you're screwed without Intel. AMD simply can't provide enough performance with their desktop parts and even when they get close it's at significantly higher power usage and similar or higher price.

You think they make record profits by lowering the price on CPUs? Silly person that is not how it works.

Not to mention that this would completely sink AMD and leave Intel with even less competition.

New hires with a freshly minted BS in engineering (assuming you can find a job opening that only requires a BS) start at ~60k. MS grads start at ~70k and PhD grads start at ~90k.
Still thinking about majoring in communications or psychology now?

Obviously you have no idea what it takes to be an engineer. I am in Mech at Waterloo and it is no cakewalk. (Obviously Intel's engineers aren't going to be mechanical engineers, but I assure you that any type of engineering is demanding.)

As a former Intel tech, this is great to see. Was making just over $40K when I was there a few years ago, and glad to see the techs now are getting what they earned. That place would not be able to function without good techs working together.

I think it's fantastic a company gives back to it's employees instead of hording it at the upper echelons... Oh wait they can afford to do both! Oh well still good to see at least one company that takes is extra $$ and reinvests it into their people. Unlike the company I work for, only the CEO and executive staff see any bonuses/raises. We don't even have a training budget!
