Hey , i got a question,

My motherboard died and getting a new one is quite expensive, so i got two options,

- Buy a new motherboard and keep my
Core i3 540 which i managed to oc to 4Ghz.

-Buy a new MB + AMD Athlon 750k and oc it.

I did a bit of checking and i found intel cores are much faster but the amd one has
more cores and decent overclocking potential.

Whats your opinion?

What's your budget? Why are you considering the Athlon 750k?

The general rule of thumb is this: Intel has fewer cores, but they are more powerful whereas AMD has more cores, but they are weaker. Therefore, Intel for single-threaded apps and most games, AMD for multi-threaded apps and some games.

Just a rule of thumb though, there are exceptions.

+1 Hi have to agree with the above op with the intel cpu if you can you would be best off with the Intel chip with a board that you can upgrade in the future .. The go with the 750k is a fine chip but its fm2 socket I belive and its a dead socket now since AMD HAS move to the FM2+ SOCKET and it looks as tho as for now there is no future for the amd 3+ sockets on the fx chips.
So you best bet with be stick with Intel since you already have that chip???? Have you shop around for board prices> and where at?

Hi,

How much money are you spending.
Keep in mind that for about 600-800
you can get a fx-6300 / core i5 with 8 gb ram and descent GPU for new.

If you are spending more than 350 $ consider putting 200 more to get new gear at todays technology with warranty instead of the choices you mention above. System are already outdated for modern gaming

To just get up and running, ebay, or ask here if anyone has a board for sale. (I have an LGA1366 laying around, but that isn't useful to you)

Not worth investing in a new first gen I-series motherboard. FM2 is a recent abandonment. LGA775 has been dead for several years.

Thanks to everyone for the quick reply ,
Thing is , My current board is dead and getting a new 1156 one here costs around 100$ [ i can't order online]
but for around 160$ i can get a new FM2+ mobo and an 750k and overclock it since i already got aftermarket cooling that i dont want to waste on some of the cheap non overclockable intel cpus.
plus , since im getting an FM2+ board i should have easier upgrades in the future don't i?

Currently im running a GTX 460 and from my understanding even the higher end Intel cpus will run similar to the 750k with this gpu [in games that is].

For similiar price i can get the Intel G3220 [not the i3 one] but its non overclockable so i tought to stick with the 750k.

Here are all of my options
- AMD 750k
-AMD A6 6400k
-Intel g3220 [its 20$ cheaper]
- AMD VISION A6 3670
-AMD a4 3300
-AMD 740 [ also 20$ than the rest]

my main uses are gaming and web browsing, I prefer overclockable cpu as i get sick plesure from it.
Which one should i get?

Thanks

Yes there is upgrades for the FM2+ BOARD but for how long I am a amd fan trust me I have a 8320 FX Trinty 5800k richland 6600k But the upgrade chips for amd the new KAVERI chips are like 189 bucks for a 7850 so hopefully or a 7700 chip.. So Hopefully amd will make more FM2+ CHIPS BUT the cost is so high for there chips right now. This is why Intel sounds better at this time.

The 750k is slower, clock for clock, than an old Phenom II x4 965. I wouldn't recommend it. If you can find an i3 4130 and an H81 board cheap, I would go that route. Even overclocked to 4.3ghz, the 750k cannot beat an ivy i3, much less a haswell one. Only the FX 6300 can challenge an i3.
