A guess is a thermal warning. Check your CPU temperature. An easy fix
may be to clean the dust from the case. You may also want to try running
with the covers off.

Hello Roger,

I went to control panel> Sounds> advanced> and muted the PC beep. It seems
it's gone for now.

However getting back to your idea, I am running a laptop and it does get hot
sometimes (I run up to 6 applications at the same time). How can check the
CPU temperature?

Also how can I find out what it the maximum RAM my laptop can take (I am
running XP Pro SP2 but don't know what kind of BIOS and mother board I
have).

Thank you for you help.

Both answers are in your manual.
