Internet disconnects at random intervals, how to find out cause and possible solution?

Hi. My internet connection has been disconnecting often just this past week. I suspect it to be an ISP issue, but before I go and start raging at them, I want to create an investigation. If possible, I want to be able to pinpoint the issue or at least give them information they require to actually take this seriously and not just say that "oh, there's probably just a lot of people using the internet at that time, please try again", because sadly, they actually do say that at times. 🙁


  • -Upon initial observation, the internet will disconnect on random intervals causing ping to time out request.

    -I have already tried removing any possible virus, spyware, malware, etc.

    -The disconnect will cause all devices connected to the router to be disconnected and not just one.

    -I've already tried resetting the router.

Any way I can help you help me with this issue, just let me know.
 
If ALL devices connected to the router disconnect, then it is either the router or modem that is having problems. It could be your router is overheating. Many models have had heating problems. Google your router model and "overheating" to see if others have that problem.
 


Router overheat, interesting. I never knew this was possible. Well this is my router.

I can't seem to find any reviews of it overheating though. Also, it only started happening this week and my utilization of the internet didn't increase.
 
I am not a fan of modem/router combos. If you ever switch to something besides DSL the router is a door stop. Have you ever watched the LEDs on the router when one of these disconnects happens? Do they all flash off or anything? Could be something as simple as the wall-wart power supply dieing.

If you are considering a replacement I recommend separating the modem and router. Find out what the approved modems are from your ISP. Then you can use any router you find. I recommend at least an N600 -- dual band 2.4 and 5Ghz and 300Mbit in each band. If you live somewhere that has a lot of 2.4Ghz WIFI, you can try the 5Ghz band to see if it improves your throughput.
 


Thanks for the recommendation. Right now, changing hardware is really not an option for me. Hence, trying to fix the issue myself or pushing the ISP to do something about it, with proof that they're at fault.

The LEDs on the router do not flash off. Just as they always are, they remain to be On for PWR, Link, Data, and WLAN.

Additional observation: Sometimes the internet doesn't disconnect, but ping gets really high. Like 4-digit ms high.
