Ditching XP is not such a big of a deal for IE. We all know that the vast majority of XP users are governements and large companies. Those users, like my governement, still runs on IE6 and have no plans yet to upgrade. They day we'll finally upgrade, we'll probably by on 7.

As for the average end-users, most are ready to get to 7 if they're not already there. And, if they're happy with XP, they're probably happy with IE8 too.

i doubt many peopel will move to windows 7 just for ie9 but hey its good to see them moving past xp. i'll be upgrading past xp with my next build but as my pc is almost 4 years old and my xp pro was free no need to upgrade it yet 😀

Even if you don't use IE, people really need to move on. XP is old. I know people don't like change but 10 years? Win 7 is not Vista. Vista was a resource hog and they fixed alot of the issues in Win 7. 10 years in PC talk is a lifetime. Just make sure you have a half decent cpu and 4 gigs of memory. Done. Even with XP, a dual core processor is mandatory these days. An OEM copy of Win 7 runs about $100 so it's not like they are charging some outrageous amount.

That's one less operating system IE runs on.
Opera - Linux, Xp, vista, 7, OSX, FreeBSD, Solaris (and various phones, Wii)
Firefox - Linux, Xp, vista, 7, OSX
Chrome - Linux, Xp, vista, 7, OSX

Calm down on the shove-my-views-down-your-throat arrogance. I still use XP on my brand new desktop (Athlon X3, 5850) just because I prefer the power user interface and customization abilities of XP over the mac-esque qualities of 7. For example, I think the new taskbar is 1 step forward (pinning) and 2 steps back (bulky as hell, no classic start menu). The only reason I do have Win 7 Ultimate x64 also installed for certain games (BF:BC2).

Really Xp is ten years old. Time to move on. Whether it be windows seven, osx, or linux, I dont care. I am just tired of all the xp crybabies.

lol all you whiners...i understand there are stuff in business making xp a must..but i prefered vista over xp..and will if i have another life

windows 7 is so much easier for me to use with printers, components to work just right away...xp was a pain to to format over and over again...

i am also sad that i cant get ie9 on my dads laptop with xp..but as a win 7 and snow leopard user i dont care

[citation][nom]eponymouscowherd[/nom]"Windows 7 runs as good as XP and has more features, why are people still using a very old OS ?"Maybe because what they have works and they don't want or need to spend the money to upgrade? Duh![/citation]
And thats fine but quit complaining that the rest of the world is moving on. Just because you cant afford a new computer doesnt mean the rest of us should do without.

It seems to me that the XP base (who haven't seen any benefit to upgrading to 7) are also slowing the forward movement of other software. For the most part, they're still demanding 32 bit programs, so the major benefits of 64 bit programs gets delayed for all. Why should a developer waste money and effort when most people are still clinging desperately to a 32 bit OS (unless of course they see the importance of being ahead of the competitors and developing for the future now).

Microsoft in particular, and other major software companies in general need to do a better job of educating consumers (corporate consumers specifically) in the advantages of moving ahead to 64 bit computing. That menas bottom line, dollars and cents benefits.

At least, that's my two cents worth.

Ryan Gavin, senior director of IE business and marketing, told the Register, "A modern web needs a modern operating system," and that Microsoft would "continue to focus on how we do a great job with Windows 7."

That's a garbage argument Microsoft makes. Firefox and Chrome both run just fine on older operating systems, including Windows XP, and both out perform IE9 in both speed (Chrome) and hardware acceleration (Firefox 4).

I need to "move on"? Really? I think YOU are the one who needs to move on. I'm not having a problem.

well, I guess it's time to upgrade this old windows XP computer of mine. I think the new 27" iMac looks pretty good. I'm getting it

For all of the high end workstation systems that I built this year for a local design company, Windows xp is still used. (either the 32 bit or 64 bit version)
The main reason is that it is faster. Some people like to say things like windows 7 will be fast on a modern system and while that is true, it doesn't mean much if it is faster on windows xp. you can put the engine from a Lamborghini inside of a hummer and it will go fast but it doesn't change the face that it will still be slower than if it was in the smaller and lighter car frame.

Businesses are less likely to upgrade because if a older OS meets all of the needs and does everything that you could want done, why would you go to a newer OS that is slower just to do the same thing. Old is not a good enough reason to upgrade.

The wheel is old, does that mean we should develop a new wheel?

The goal of the OS is to run the programs that you want while staying out of the way. I know many people who customized their linux installs to a point where it is almost entirely command line.

People want a OS that will handle all of their hardware and programs. WIndows xp does that for most people and is why they wont upgrade.

On my pc, I have windows xp, vista and windows 7 installed
I still use windows XP because it does everything I need and runs faster. it boots in around 12-13 seconds to a usable state with no additional loading on a 1TB 7200RPM drive, I have the startup tweaked a lot, it only used 30-40MB of memory at startup, it responds to most things pretty much instantly because compared to windows 7, there is much less to load.

The only reason why I use windows vista and 7 is because I need to use the os in order to provide tech support for it, and I also use windows 7 for dx10 only games.

Firefox with IETab add-on to let FF render in IE mode if a webpage does not render properly in FF.

Also it's time to move away from XP as legacy crap is making everyone suffer from getting the true potential of their systems.

No, no it's not time to move on. Why on earth should you upgrade to a new OS when the never fixed the problems with the old one?

No XP is fine. Microsoft is just screwing the stupid for more money. If you want to pay for an OS go ahead, but there is no reason you can't use XP with modern hardware except that MS doesn't want to support it.

No great loss there.

Reasons stated is marketing and to try to get people to upgrade by FORCE.

IE9... still sucks, still behind and always the copy-cat browser.
Its "clean" design (finally) will only last a few days or weeks for most users as sites and apps will want to add TOOL BARS to IE, so expect 2-4 rows of crap.

Its single-row interface design is rather crappy. Only half the space for tabs, as compared to Opera or Chrome. Opera is still a cleaner and easier layout. Ie9, just like Ie8, is still difficult to tell which tab is actually active with its transparency/color design.

[citation][nom]hellwig[/nom]Don't care how much better it is than IE8, it won't be better than Opera.[/citation]
a good guy which talk about something he knows...
generally you have to test something before saying "its worst than something else"

Opera sucks, crash, is slow, I really don't know what the dev team has in mind during the dev process...
well... I have never try it, but I want to say this. 😉
