I now (for some unknown reason) have a selection of "Internet Gateway" under
network connections in addition to my NIC.

What is this? Why do I have it? How do I get rid of it?

Control panel add/remove windows components
select Networking Services
untick Internet Connection Sharing Gateway & Discovery (something like
that)
use help on it if you want to know a bit about it, sounds like you don't
need it.
