so i have verizon dsl (i know, not the best at all)
im paying for 15mb/DL and it works fine, when im watching a movie or playing games i get no issues. i run a speedtest and i get the result i should be getting

but when i download something i cant download faster than 1.4mb at the time, no matter if its on browser, steam, uplay or a torrent. if im downloading 2 things it splits it.
anything i can do to remove that "cap"?

Solution
The download speed cap is set by your ISP, there's nothing you can physically do to improve it other than purchasing a higher package if they offer one.
You might be getting a bit confused between MB and Mb, they are different measurements, there's 8 bits to 1 byte, and when scaled up that means 8 Megabits to 1 Megabyte.

Your ISP usually advertises in Mb/s (Megabits per second) where as your downloads will usually get measured in MB/s (Megabtyes per second). Your 15 Mb/s is equal to around 1.8 MB/s so your download speed is not far off what you should be expecting. Then again, the speed they advertise you is usually "up to" the specified speed.

You'll find your download speed will fluctuate and that can depend on many factors, i.e. the time of day, it's usually faster at off-peak hours (night time and really early in the morning), your PC might be downloading updates in the background etc... All this accounts towards your total download speed.

I hope that clears it up a little :)

no see, i thought about that. but thats not the case because i USED to have 1mb and i upgraded to 15mb also when i look at my router it saying my speed is 14115Kbps which is 14mb

It's likely something else is downloading, or the server you're downing from might be a bit overloaded therefore it can't provide you with the speed. There's so many limiting factors it's quite hard to determine something to be the cause.

Also, re-reading your original post, when 2 things are downloading it is all too common for it to split the speed because it all adds up to your maximum total download speed. Its also common for one download to be more dominant than the others.

if im downloading the same torrent here and in my friends house, but we have different companies.
his can go up to say 3.3mb depending on the seeds, but mine will cap at 1.4 no matter what..
and if he starts watching a video on youtube the download speed of the torrent wont go down because there is no cap, on the other hand if the video requires 1mb to play then my torrent download goes down to .4mb because it splits it.
this aint only on torrents, its anything thats downloading and again, there are no background downloads.

the issue aint the speed itself but the cap on it. so im wondering if there is something in the router settings i can use to remove the cap.
