Internet problems after system restore in XP

Hi hope someone can help FAST im having (actually my brother is)hes got a new Dell computer and yesterday he went to Microsoft site to download his updates for his windows XP OS after doing so he couldnt hook into his dial-up connection to the internet,well he called Dell and the tech had him go in and 1st delete his cookies then his internet files in his browser, why I have no idea beings the problem stemed from the updates he downloaded from microsoft well this did him no good,so I suggested the system restore program in XP he did this and set it back to the day before he did the updates from microsoft,this worked for him and he is able to get into his dial up connection ok and onto the internet but now all the web content is downloading VERY VERY SLOW I thought this was from deleting his internet files and cookies but I had hin go to a couple sites to build up his cookies and files then go back to these sites to see if they down load faster the 2nd time back but he says they dont any suggestions.All is welcome.Thanks for the help.

Perhaps it would help if your brother deleted his Internet Connection, and created it anew.

It might also help to remove the modem from the Device Manager and allow Windows to reinstall the device.

I thought of that but wouldn't you think that if there was any conflicts at all with either of these that he wouldn't be able to make his internet connection at all.Has this ever happened to any one else with a MSN dial-up connection?

Perhaps the update site installed the wrong drivers for his system, including the modem. Forcing Windows to redetect the modem couldn't hurt. It also might be a good idea to reinstall the TCP/IP stack.

Of course, he could always format and start from scratch. Then I'd recommend turning off the automatic updates, and examine each suggested update from Microsoft carefully before the installation.

Since this is a new Dell system, perhaps there was a system recovery disk included with the computer that could prove to be useful?
