Internet speed fluctuating between 10kb and 8MB

Thank you in advance for anyone that will attempt to help.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on a Lenovo Y500.

I have tried the following (as far as I remember) and still get 1 min of 8mb/s and about 15 min of 10kb/s:

- Tested with different WiFi connections, different cables for a wired connection, and tried the connection (wireless and wired) with another laptop that ran at 8MB without a hitch.

- Tried deleting avast and restarting.

- Tried looking for programs that might be hogging the bandwidth and found nothing.

- Tried restoring to an earlier setting.

- Tried updating wired and wireless drivers.

- I've tried scanning for viruses with Avast free.

- I've used a USB mobile data device and it connects just fine, so the problem lays with the laptop's internet configuration (or at least that's what I assume).

- I read that disabling Bluetooth might work, it didn't.

Also I'm in a hotel and staying here for over a month, so I have no access to the router.

Any help would be appreciated.

You don't tell us of any of the hardware you're using. It could be wifi jumping between 2.4 and 5GHz if you've got a dual band router and network adapter. It could be other people jumping on and off your wifi

As I stated, It's not just the wifi, it's also the wired connection, they are both acting up the same way. I've also mentioned I'm using a Lenovo Y500 laptop, the Dual GT750m model.

Are other people using your wifi? How far from the router are you? Are there walls and floors between the Lenovo and the router? Do you move the laptop around?

I don't know what router, I'm in a hotel in Japan. The signal is strong for Wifi, and I tested the Wifi and the wired connections on my friends laptop (in my room) and his laptop was working great with no drop in speed.

They took the model off of the Lenovo website, but here's a link to the review of the laptop.

Just because the signal is strong doesn't mean their bandwidth will be. Since you are in a hotel I wouldn't even trust being on their wifi. Especially in japan where the population is out the ying yang. Several hundred people could be on that same wifi an it would still say you have a strong connection because that is based on the interference between you an the router. The router still has to communicate with their ISP which is the real issue if many people are using it.

So that's the most likely cause of the fluctuation in speed - lots of people also using the same router. Maybe you can compare the fluctuation in different hot-spots around the city.

That is not the problem. I have already mentioned that I tested it with my friend's laptop. I had them both connected, and when the speed dipped on my laptop I'd do a speed test. His laptop would get an 8mb/s+ speed and mine would be still loading the speed test page (that's how slow it is). I also tested the dip with Steam downloading, his wouldn't got under 8mb/s while mine sticks to 10-15kb/s.

First time I've heard of it. Maybe he's got a better laptop. And a better wifi card.

Yeah his wifi is probably a stronger model. You're positive you have the latest drivers for your laptop as well? What is the model of the laptop you are referring to an what is the model of your friends laptop.

He has a 5 year old Dell. I'm using a Lenovo Y500 GT750m.

My tab and S3 mobile still get a fast connection. I need real help instead of arguing who has the better laptop.

And you don't think us taking our time to try an help you isn't real help? Okay whatever dude lol the laptop models was troubleshooting. Call the manufacturer of your computer and stay on the phone for a few hours than.

I'm sorry but you weren't helping. You are bringing up external causes when I laid the exact issue I'm facing. I've tested enough to know that there is a conflict within the laptop and you keep asking questions that I have already explained in my first post.

For those that face a similar problem. Someone on another forum helped me out with it. The problem was occurring from Hotspot Shield, all I had to do is delete it.
