Question Internet through modem is fine but through my new router is terrible

Hi, so I just bought a new Asus modem to hopefully fix some internet issues.

When I connect to my modem via ethernet and ping Google, everything is fine but when I try and do it with my router, also via ethernet, the pinging reaches thousands of ping.

Anyone able to help with this?

What are the specific models of the hardware you are discussing?

The router model is Asus Rt-AC68U wireless ac1900 dual band gigabit router
