Question Internet Throughput/Speed ?

Hello Everyone: My question is about Internet speed/throughput. I am in BC, Canada and my Internet provider is Rogers/Shaw. The plan is called Internet 600, which rates download speeds up to 600Mbps. Here are the results of several Speed Tests.

I ran the tests several times and on different computers, always with similar results.

This just a basic home setup, with 2 laptops, a Sony/Android TV, 2 Smartphones, and a Lenovo tablet. Before I contact Rogers/Shaw, I would be interested in any comments on if there are things I should be looking at on my configuration to find out why the throughput doesn't even come close to the rated speed.

ISP router model? Your own router model? How are they connected? It seems you are connected at 100Mbps.

Also on the computers run "ipconfig /all" (without quotes) via the Command Prompt.

You should be able to copy and paste the full results without needing to retype everything.

Be sure to indicate the source system(s).

Are you confusing bits and bytes?

600 is the maximum speed you can run also cat 5 cables are limited to 100. The WiFi depends on what WiFi standard the router supports by any chance is is 802.11g?

Cat5e does full gigabit speed. Assuming non crappy cable.

Do you have cat 5 or cat 5e cables and does your router only use and older standard of WiFi such as 802.11g rather than a newer standard such as 802.11ac/x

BTW, cat 5 cable can run 1Gbps in short distance without problem. I'm running AC1300.

All of the internet speed test sites use Mbps, no one uses MBps except Windows local file transfer.

ISP plans also use Mbps, no one uses MBps.

Yes, but actually having "Cat 5" is rare these days.

Depends how long they’ve had it though and you can buy it on Amazon within the top like 10 results

Well, I probably remembered it wrong. But nowadays no one is selling cat5 cables, or very rare, as mentioned above. Pinout is all the same since cat5, and cat5 / cat5e both have 8 wires. I think whether all strands are used is the difference (if there is a signal on the strand, like 100Mbps NIC port might not use all pairs)

When people mention cat5 today, they mean cat5e. Unless OP really uses old cat5 cable.

People have no problem with 1Gbps and someone can even run 10G using cat5 cable in short distance.

It works for someone doesn't mean I encourage it though.

If OP's router's ports are only 100Mbps, then the speed test result will definitely below 100.

Thank you to everyone who responded.

• Router Model: It is supplied by Shaw, and I believe it to be what they call Ignite WiFi Gateway - Arris TG3482ER3 or TB3482G?
• Are you confusing bits and bytes? I don't think so. I am assuming that unless otherwise indicated, everything is quoted in Mbps (Megabits per second).
• Ethernet cable: I am aware of the limitation with a CAT5 cable, but it was all I had for testing purposes. I wasn't expecting to see any results over 100Mbps; but I wasn't expecting to see anything less than 100Mbps either.
• WiFi Standards: Radio types supported: 802.11b 802.11g 802.11n 802.11a 802.11ac
• Internet Plan: Internet 600 is an older plan and is no longer offered, which is why it does not show on the website. However, I am definitely subscribed to Internet 600 (not 60).

Anyway, I have a call in to Shaw, so we'll see what they have to say.
