Question Internet worse than other PCs on the same network

I have been having lag problems while playing Diablo 4. I initially assumed it was my apartment’s internet, my router, or Blizzard, but I now think it’s my laptop. The internet suggested I disable cross-play, which I did, but I still see lag. And when I was playing side-by-side with my cousin on the same network, I noticed that I was getting lag and he was getting none. Also, today I was playing a game while on discord, and my sound was mostly not making it to my friends, despite having no issues with the mic test on my end. This was happening even in menus when my CPU was at 20% or less and my network usage was also low. And when I connected to the same wifi on my phone, discord worked perfectly. Also google searches would randomly take 10+ seconds.

Also, I generally use ethernet, but I have also tried wifi with similar results.

I am using a Lenovo Legion 7 refurbished that I bought in May 2022. My router is an ancient Linksys E2500, which I am happy to replace if we think it’s the issue, but I’m not so sure. I’m happy to supply any other specs.

Normally I'd point the finger at wireless, but if you're getting the same with both then it would seem to be just your machine itself. Usually this would mean a software problem whether that's anything you have interacting with your network stack or perhaps a problem with drivers.

I'd say download the latest drivers available for both your wireless and ethernet then remove any third party software (meaning anything not provided by windows itself) that interacts with your networking be it firewall, monitoring software or software for the network cards. Then uninstall both the ethernet and wireless adapters along with any driver software for them. Reboot the system and if windows installs some base drivers for them test with that first if it doesn't then install the appropriate driver and test.

You could also try running latencymon to see if perhaps there's a driver specifically causing issues with your system.

to have a look what the problem could be:
run userbenchmark.com and post the http link of your result, e.g. https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/28977730

Reset the BIOS by jumper clrCMOS or JBAT or similar (eventually you will have to set the boot priority correctly after that)

check windows integrity
open the command prompt as administrator and type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

clean boot

check the memory by running memtest.org usb autoinstaller (bootable USB flash drive)

check the hard drive for errors with its manufacturer´s tool

According to Lenovo my drivers are up to date, is there a better way to check?

To find things that interact with my network should I just sort by network usage in task manager? Also, if I’m uninstalling my network adapters, presumably I would need to download them first?

Latencymon seemed to identify “HDAudBus.sys - High Definition Audio Bus Driver” as the highest reported ISR routine and “nvlddmkm.sys - NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver” as the highest reported DPC routine execution time, not sure if there’s a lot to be done about that. It suggested I disable CPU throttling, and my power settings are on high performance, not sure if they mean something else.

https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/62992879 - seems like I’m killin it.

The DISM command seemed to operate successfully, not sure what I should do to further test this.

It seems like my hard drives are SK Hynix but I couldn’t find any specific tools to error check from them based on like 5 minutes of google searches. I ran chkdsk and it seemed pretty spotless.

Still need to try since they seemed more involved:
  • Uninstall ethernet and wireless adapters
  • reset the BIOS
  • Clean boot
  • Memtest (need to find a suitable usb)
I’ll get to these soon. Thanks for your help so far!

Ethernet was already set to private. My computer refuses to download the sk hynix tools, ill use another computer when I have access this weekend. I installed that lan driver and nothing seems to have changed.
