Tuesday my Iomega 34766 froze and would not reboot. So I left it unplugged for a couple hours to reset. When it restarted only the white power light would come on. Also the leds by the Ethernet port will not light up. So I took it apart and hooked it up to my computer and the hard drive is still good but the partitions and the OS is gone. It was backed up so I did not loose any files. Is there a way to tell if the board inside the NAS still works before trying to reinstall the OS? I have seen instructions on how to replace a the drive but I am a Windows guy and the reinstalling Linux part looks very confusing to me.

Thank You,
Dave

You shouldn't need to reinstall Linux. The OS should be housed on the SOC not on the drives. You should just need to reinitialize/format the replacement drive.

If it's unstable after replacing the drives, then you know it's the NAS that's failed.

TyrOd,

Thanks for the reply. Almost positive the board inside the NAS went bad because the Ethernet port doesn't light up anymore but how do you tell? I can't remember if they always lit when the power was on. Usually the hard drive stops in these not the board inside. I think this model has to have a 32mb partition on if for a OS to go on. It has one 2tb drive in it. Tried new Seagate I got for another computer and just the power led lights up in front. One part of me says to throw it away. The other says to put a 4tb 7200rpm drive in it if it can be fixed.

Thanks
Dave

Yesterday using Ubuntu I on a spare 1Tb drive restored the first 32Mb. In Disk Manager there are 3 Partitions 32Mb, 20Gb Healthy (Primary Partition) and 911Gb Raw. Set up a USB stick and tried to do a recovery boot using directions in Recovery (Home Media CE). USB stick only flashes once when power cord is plugged in. Not sure if USB stick is setup correctly. There are directions to setup are for Linux and Windows not sure if Boot-ROM-Code is correct.

Hello,

My iOmega Cloud Edition NAS drive comes on but no network connection there is no input/output activity registering on the network router port nor on the NAS... took the 2TB hard drive out and connected SATA port to USB on my computer. The hard drive is recognized but windows prompts for formatting the hard drive. I need to recover 1.5tb worth of data on it... please help.
