Does the HDD make any unusual sounds, like, clicking or skipping? If so, the HDD may have experienced a hard crash, meaning that the data can only be recovered by a professional with the appropriate tools necessary to perform the operation.

Splendid
HDD's of any brand or format can die or become corrupted, often without warning.
As a precaution, I replace our backup drives at work every year.

If you're lucky data recovery software might be able to recover everything, and the drive could provide many years of subsequent use. I wouldn't risk that for any important data of course.

If you're unlucky, the drive has physical damage or catastrophic data damage. Depending on what's happened, even forensic data recovery costing thousands might not be able to recover anything.

Start with free data recovery tools and see how you go.
