So I was in conversation with some friends over coffee yesterday morning. Eventually we began to talk "shop" as we are all computer forensic investigators from the Windows 7 era.

One member of our group began talking about the ability to track the iPhone 12 series. To which I suggested using airplane mode. But he insisted that even though you are in airplane mode, the phone still "pings" local towers.

I then suggested turning off the phone completely. But he said, even though the phone is "off" it can still be tracked as it is not "off" in the true sense of the word.

Can anyone tell me it this is accurate?

Thank you.

Thank you. These were interesting and informative links.

The link to the Scientific America confirms my belief that an iPhone cannot be tracked when off.

I thought that perhaps there may be a wake feature for the phone, much in the same way that some computers have a "wake on LAN" function.
