what is iquicksearch? it just installed itself in my favorites and i cant get
rid of it.
did i get it with recent updates? my anti virus says it is ok

Its called malware spyware, parasites, adware, etc. which your anti-virus
program will not pick up.

thank you i think i got it. is it not ok to do the microsoft updates? i
usually only do the critical updates

i followed the instructions and it came back again, the problem started
before i installed new norton package shouldnt the new package keep it from
cooming back?

Yes the critical updates are absolutely important. Keep that up.
Unfortunately things still get through even if you are fully patched. A
firewall is also a "must have" . This will help block malicious sites and
scripts. If nothing else you can enable the built-in XP Firewall. There
are a other recommended ones free and otherwise. Knowledge is the best
security. Read up. You will learn.
