Question on IRQ settings. In device manager I show this for settings I think this is a problem but am not sure.
IRQ 11-has all these on it.
1-ACPI-IRQ-HOLDER FOR PCI IRQ STEERING
2-VORTEX 8830 multifunction platform
3-VORTEX 8830 PCI audio
4-GEFORCE Prophet GTS II
5-IRQ HOLDER FOR PCI STEERING
Number 1and5 also show on IRQ-9and10.
Is this a problem? If so how do I fix it?
Thanks for your help.

Bubba,I am om Win 98se.The device manager says no conflicts but Hercules say that the video card can only be on IRQ with PCI steering. Its on the same one as my sound card.

You have the sound card right under your graphics card- that's bad. The first pci slot is shared with the agp slot. It is a graphics slot for a pci graphics card. So move your sound card down. That will help- and your agp will be on it's own in 11 and that's as it should be. Don't put anything in the first pci slot. The last two are also shared so if the sound card's in one, leave the other empty. Good luck.

"Are you saying that I can dodge bullets?"

Having all the devices on one IRQ is usually a problem I encounter when I format my drive and then install windows with all the cards in the computer.
However, if I format and install windows with only the video card in and then put in the cards and their drivers in one at a time, windows gives them all different IRQs.
Did you just install windows recently?

Bubba and jg,first of all my sound card is in the second slot over from the agp slot.Bubba I ran the 98 and 98se disks over the os a few weeks ago.

Crashman,Hi the main problems are the viedo card dosent seem as fast as it should be and I am getting a lot of screen flickering.I moved the sound card to another slot but it dosent seem to have helped.

Do you have another sound card? The Vortex cards are having problems with resource allocation on VIA and Intel 815 chipsets. While I forced mine to work, it would have been easier to use a different one (I liked it so much I had to keep mine). You can try manually setting the PCI slot your soundcard is in through Bios, that might help. Also check which IRQ soundblaster compatability mode is set to. Since that IRQ is set by the program, it can be modified by changing the string in your Autoexec file. (i.e. where it says "I5" you can change it to "I7" and vice versa) After making the change, save the file, and when you restart your computer, it will be set to the IRQ you choose. There are more suggestions in the vortexofsound.com forum, but try those first. I don't know which IRQ's you can set Soundblaster Compatability to, but I changed mine from 7 to 5 and then excluded 5 from the resouce table in Bios and it worked. Also set your Bios from PNP OS to NON PNP OS, and your bios will try to free up an IRQ for the display addapter, unlike Windows, which does not properly proiritize your cards.
