But seriously, what kind of stuff are you doing, whats your monitor setup- all this can make it more or less of an useless upgrade

if you already have a large monitor setup (triple 4k or other outrageous setups) then it may make sense
If you have 1 20 inch monitor- it'd be a large waste of money.
if your playing bf4 ultra settings or bitcoin mining it may be more sensible than if you only web browsing.

If anything you will have more problems with 3 way SLI than with 2 way. 2 way SLI works pretty well for about 70% of demanding games and Crossfire probably 50% if I had to hazard a guess. SLI problems can range from just plain not working to causing stuttering.

You just answered your own question. Plus bitcoin mining is dead for gpus

If you're pushing 1440p or 2160p two way SLI with 980/980Tis will be enough to max demanding games at 50+FPS, but if you head towards triple 1440p or 2160p that's where I'd say 3 and 4 way SLI would start to make sense. I like SLI for the extra juice at 1440p to make sure I get 50+FPS in games, but it's very much dependent on whether you play demanding games at higher resolutions, if you have the $$, and understanding that sometimes there will be problems. Like I said it's about a 70% solution for me on demanding games; great when it works, which for me is most of the time for games where I need it, like Crysis 3 @1440p it gives me about another ~33 FPS, DA:I another 60 FPS etc.

SLI 980s at a minimum then or AMD equivalent 390X. Nvidia streaming games from my pc via my shield tablet has been great, streaming from the Grid is less great, but my connection is only 20 Mbps. This should give you a good idea of what to expect from 2 way and 3 way SLI with 980s, keeping in mind that there are some games that simply won't work with SLI or have much if any benefit from a 3rd card: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_gtx_980_sli_review,1.html.
