Is 50 degrees too hot for a 1700+ AMD?

I just bought a new cpu fan and installed it... it's at 49-50 degrees idle, 55 while running a game. Is this okay? Or do I know need to go buy a new heatsink??

It depends on what type of processor you have. Is it a Palomino, or a Thoroubred? If it's a Paly, then your operating temperatures are just fine, in fact they're terrific :). If it's a Tbred, then it is a tad on the high side, but nothing to worry about if you're not experiencing problems.

Looks about normal but wait for someone more experienced to reply.

Have a XP2200+ here. Board Temp 31C, cpu 44C idle.
I added one of those temperature variable case fans. Brought down the temperature a few degree's.
Also the room temperature makes a difference.

Did u buy and apply any thermal grease (something like Arctic Silver, I'm sure someone will suggest some good stuff) or did ur cpu fan have some sticky tab (they often do) and did u remove the paper?

There is a cpu id program there unt Processors->Technical Resources->Utilities,Drivers & Uptdates->AMD processor Utility and updates

Below should take u there immediately.

Thanks, I just downloaded that, but I don't see anything about Palimino or TB... where would I look? BTW... thanks a lot for all the help so far :)

Same here, thought it was just my crazy system yet again lol 😀.

Anyways, you could goto your BIOS & check your VCore. If I remember correctly, if it's listed as 1.7 Volts or above, it's a Palomino, if it's less than that, it's a Thoroughbred. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, my memory isn't all that great 😀.

did you get a model number?

Model 6= palomino

Using the program "cpuinfo" on that AMD page mentioned, it says the following:
Family.Model.Step: 6.6.2

Does that mean I have a Palimino?

Look under CPU ID[1} -> EAX -> bits 7-4
This I believe is the model (it says that on what I see)
and corresponds to my processor type,

Instruction________Feature______Value

CPU ID [1]
_-_EAX
______-_Bits 7-4____Model:_______8

6 means Palimino, and if the other person/gentleman is to be believed it is not too hot.

1) You didn't leave the paper tab on the bottom of the heat sink did u? (Was there one?)
2) You used some thermal grease/paste or the heatsink had a preprepared bad of the stuff under the paper tab?
3) You don't have any extra case fans but are thinking of getting one?
4) The room temperature is..??
5) The difference between the Mobo Temp and the Processor Temp? (I have found this somewhat more indicative but the case temp can also be too warm).

In all.. 50C should be about right.

Check again tomorrow or later maybe someone else will add to this.

Signing off 4 2nite! 🙂

Thanks for all your help, have a good night.

1. & 2. For the record, not sure of anything below the heatsink, I bought this preassembled, my fan just died on me and I just bought a new CPU fan and screwed it onto the current heatsink.

3. I actually already have another case fan.

4. The room temp is about 78 degrees

5. I'm not really sure what the mobo tempature is... but Motherboard Monitor reports three temps, 25, 38, 50.

Just to show you how good the tbred b's are. My 1700 is sitting at 2376mhz (900mhz oc) on 1.85 volts. It never gets above 56C in a very warm room. At stock speeds it sits about 34C idle.
