Sorry, but that is dumb advice. Don't every base a purchase decision based SOLELY on brand. ALWAYS base purchase decisions on "model", and then only choose a model that has at least somewhat decent professional review feedback.
Yes, this is true. I was just ripping on Gigabyte in general.

Their reputation re. PSUs is their own fault. They sold bad, cheaply made units.
As for monitors, it is still true and fair to say that in a given category, a Gigabyte model is not going to be the best pick. Reviews do back this up even if it's a general statement.

As for their GPUs and motherboards, it's a different world. Any negative "brand loyalty" caused by exploding power supplies or meh monitors, should not get in the way of considering a Gigabyte GPU or motherboard for purchase. The motherboards are not as good as they were a decade ago, and the company has cheaped out in certain ways. Some people had awful customer support. But they're definetly worth considering and they can last a long long time.
GPUs are more hit and miss. Some complain about coil whine. Gigabyte itself dun goofed with manufacturing faults causing cracks, but overall i would not hesitate to buy and recommend them.

So if i condense the above into buy GPUs and mobos, but avoid PSUs and monitors, it does come out as stupid advice. It's just that there's a truth to it.

Still could have phrased it better i guess.
