Is a 850w PSU enough to power 2 r9 290s?

your i5 can use 160w peak and thats with a 5.2ghz oc. the 290s will use about 400w total when voltmoded waterblocked 1.5ghz oc. so if you plan on overclocking to the moon an 850w wont cut it by a long shot... probably no less than 1200w. but if you just running a few simple overclocks like the 4.5ghz on your cpu and like 1.2ghz on the 290s... you going to be about 750w peak for those three parts alone which doesn't leave much else for the rest of you system like your cpu fan case fans drives and such. im sure you can get away with it but if you plan on running this system for years on end and the power supply obviously looses peak power over its lifetime, i would keep the gpu overclocks to a minimum.
Hm...good question. I think it's borderline. 1000W if you want to be safe since I don't know what else you have going on with your system. Only way to know will be to record what your current power consumption is now, and then again after you add the first card. If you're already getting close to your limit I would upgrade the PSU.

How do you record power consumption? I wouldn't really have anything else running at the same time as I'm gaming, I have 1 x 1080 monitor, Corsair Carbide 500r case with x4 Fans, 2tb hdd, 125 ssd and a cd/rw dvd/rw drive (which I rarely use).

Hey man, I definitely wouldn't be doing any of those things with 2x290s I really shouldn't need too, so do you think with 2x290s as standard it would be enough, of will I still need more? Thanks

Yeah you should be fine with a high quality 850w PSU

This is a much better PSU http://www.amazon.com/XFX-PRO850W-Edition-Certified-P1850SNLB9/dp/B0045L4BNW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1386433801&sr=8-3&keywords=psu+850w
