Hello,

I have been using HP Pavilion G6-2149TX for 12 years now and I think it is time to get a new laptop.
I am not much of a laptop guy, this is evident from using 3rd Gen i5 this long, but now the laptop is too old.

I don't want to spend too much on a new laptop, so is an i3 12th Gen a decent upgrade ?
I am thinking of getting Dell Vostro 3520 Laptop Intel Core i3-1215U .

I would recommend stepping up at least to Inspiron even if you take a look at their refurb outlet.

The Vostro is their budget line and is not particularly the best representation of their quality items. It is hard to say what the future is going to bring given all the advances made in the last few years, but keep in mind than an i3 will become functionally obsolete quicker than an i5 in most use cases.

Would this be better: DELL Inspiron 3511 with Core i5-1135G1 ?

I cannot recommend going with the Windows "S" operating system. Look for something with standard "Home" version.

The specs on that machine aren't bad, otherwise. I note that Wal Mart even has an i7 model for about $30 more. I see the one above ~$399 or so everywhere else.

500$, and I use it for browsing, reading books and that's it.
That's a very light work load. You could do that on a $100 Chromebook if you wanted to. Is your old HP laptop becoming slower or failing?

I tend to recommend amd over intel due to amds better integrated graphics

I am afraid of lenovo as a brand. I read somewhere they shipped laptops with malware/spyware.
Don't know the complete story, but I tend to avoid lenovo.

It's fine to buy something with Windows S, as it's easy enough to switch out of it and into normal Windows 10/11. It's just a mode, not a different version of the operating system. Getting out of it is literally only changing a setting, (although one way only - no going back to Windows S). Did this with the last laptop we bought and it's full Windows as normal.

Windows 11 S can be promoted to Win 11 Home, for free.

Thats how my MS Surface 3 Go came.

Clicky clicky directly in the MS Store.

Good to know. It hasn't always been this easy, correct?

I seem to recall there being some pretty negative feedback concerning it.
I think it was always that easy. In any case, it is now.

NOTE: Win 11 S is BitLocker enabled. Promoting it to Win 11 Home still carries the BL. Even though BitLocker is generally NOT an available feature in Home.

It is there, but it really really does not get in the way or slow things down.

windows s to full version has been a thing for last few years the issue with s version is any laptop with 32gb of storage cant be changed to full version 64gb storage can but thats all that will fit on it.

Yes, a browser and an anti virus running in the background causes it to stall and slow down
What anti-virus are you using? The built-in Windows Defender is sufficient in most cases. Other anti-viruses can be a major resource hog. You could try uninstalling whatever you're using and enabling Windows Defender instead and see if performance improves.

Well, if you want, as I said, you could try using Microsoft's built-in security instead of AVG and see if performance improves. According to Microsoft, if you disable or uninstall your current antivirus, Windows Security will be enabled automatically.

When it first came out the reports all spoke about how you could "upgrade" it to Windows 10 Pro for a one-off fee of $49-$99. I've also seen a site (HP) talk about a fee to upgrade to Windows 11 Home or 10 Pro. Whether it's always been free to change to Home, or it wasn't possible at the start, or at some point it could be done only by paying I don't know.
