Got to say I disagree wholeheartedly with your views palladin... not to say you're not entitled to them but you are being VERY narrow minded in the way you're looking at this particular market.
I'm an IT professional and have just purchased a QNAP TS-469 for personal use for the following reasons;
- convenience
- community
- compact packaging
- support
- ease of troubleshooting
Very few of these can be achieved with a home build.
Yes, I could have "built my own" but just because I'm in IT doesn't necessarily mean I'm familiar enough with all the in/outs and requirements of storage and networking which is to say, building my own would cost me far more in time than I could ever dream of saving with a pre-packaged solution.
Time is key here; not only do I not have enough of it, it doesn't come cheaply...
What's more, the promise of unrestricted features when you build your own is moot for a lot of people... the current crop of NAS's offer more features than I ever plan on using.
My suggestion to you is think outside your own domain before concluding your opinions 🙂
