People recommend using driver sweeper to clean out your registry of traces of older drivers is this better than doing it manually using the registry? And if anyone does recommend using regedit where would the files be located?

Leave the registry alone unless you know what you are doing. Driver Sweeper is a good program and I did some benchmarking years ago ( like 2005-2006 ) that proved that using it would help performance. I believe that Nvidia at least and maybe AMD have improved their drivers since then to more completely uninstall when upgrading to a new driver. So I don't know if Driver Sweeper is still necessary. I do still use it though.

you dont "need" driversweeper, but it can solve many issues. i would say dont use it if your not having issues, although it has no negative effects.

no negative effects unless you uninstall something you shouldn't

There are no negatives to Driver Sweeper. Back when I had a 8800GTS 320mb and a 9800GTX+ I did some testing with Driver Sweeper and using it would result in 3d Mark scores several hundred points higher than not using it. It was probably 3d Mark 05 or 06 and as I said in my first post I am sure Nvidia at least has improved their installer package to do a better job uninstalling the old driver when updating. So while I can't say for sure it still helps, it used to and I still use it.
