I have a dell latitude d830 and i went to power options and turned off my computer ever entering sleep mode or hibernation mode (while plugged in). i did this so i can remotely access it. is this ok?

it won't damage the computer, if that's what you mean, but it will waste power. Close down as many background applications as you can and turn off the display to save some energy when you're not using it. Alternately, you could donate that wasted energy/utility money to medical research by running folding@home's distributed supercomputer client, at folding.stanford.edu.

If you are gonna keep your laptop up and running 24/7, then I recommend you remove the battery.

I killed my laptop's battery by keeping it plugged into the AC out continuously for over 6 month whether or not the laptop was on. Before doing so my battery would last around 5.5 hours. After being continuously plugged in for over 6 months, the battery would only last 10 - 15 minutes.

Most batteries or electrical equipment have the mean time of failure approach. In other words, how long would it take for the battery to completely fail. And most psu or batteries have the 10000hour life span.

I have never used hibernation and Im on my 12th lappie. Sleep can be problematic as I have had issues win Win7 w/ machines recovering from sleep. I turn off the display when away from PC for 10 minutes but that's it.

I do disconnect from electric power at least once every quarter to maintain battery condition. This recalibrates the re-charging steps / rates so that both battery and charging system remain optimized.

Total laptop usage as of the beginning of this year is around 1100 hours according to an internal clock which sound right since it was not used much after 2006.

The IBM Thinkpad T40 was from 2003. In 2005 it was plugged into the wall for 6+ months straight. Prior to plugging it in for 6+ months I was able to get around 5.5 hours of typical usage. Immediately after unplugging from the wall after 6+ months, total battery time dropped to 10 - 15 minutes.

After an approximate 1 year of "reconditioning", in 2006 the battery was only able to hold a charge for 2 - 2.5 hours at most. To this day it can still only hold a 2 - 2.5 hour charge. Reconditioning was done by charging the battery until it was full to and draining the battery until the laptop turned off. Rinse and repeat.

What i said was Mean Time of Total failure.
