Virtual memory uses hard drive for ram all the time, when not enough ram is available.
The process is automatic. You can specify size of hard drive space allocated to virtual memory needs.
But generally you want your system to have enough ram, so that hard drive usage for virtual memory is minimal.
Because it impacts system performance catastrophically.
