Question Is Msi B550 Gaming Plus an overkill for R5 3600?

Looking to get the motherboard, just checking if I'm spending too much for my motherboard?

CPU is Ryzen 5 3600
Use case: Fps gaming+ moderate office task + sometimes video editing


If you can then please Suggest some other motherboard that can be better fit for R5 3600

If you're on a budget and you have access to a B450 chipset, then that's what you go for, just make sure it's advertised to support Ryzen 3000 series processor on the motherboard box. If the cost of a B450 chipset board and a B550 chipset board are the same, then you go for the B550, without any questions.

Am pairing
1. Currently have A rtx 2060 as of now, will upgrade to a 4000 series card soon, 32gb 3200mhz ram(16x2), 650 corsair cv, asrock b450m steel legend

Reason for motherboard change is : suddenly my PC display disappears after power on/reboots/restart

Psu fine
Gpu fine

Only thing can cause this, the motherboard

Yes, it probably is a bit "overkill" in the sense that it has a pretty strong VRM, way stronger than needed for that processor. If also not interested in future upgrade potential - that VRM is quite capable even for an R9 5950X - then this would still be overkill. But there's more to a motherboard than just the VRM.

The board features some pretty slick styling but if not interested in building a show-case system this might be overkill for that. If you're not worried about PCIe gen 4 for the GPU and system NVME drive then most B550 (or X570) is overkill too.

There are other considerations for selecting a motherboard that have little to nothing to do with the processor on it. Things like motherboard audio chipset, LAN chipsets and capabilities, WiFi (or lack of it), SATA and USB port complement.

Alternatives depend on what's available to you in your area. B450 and some other B550 boards might be cheaper still but you give up any upgrade potential for PCIe gen 4 devices if that's important. But beware especially the cheaply built B550 boards that don't support PCIe gen 4 since giving that up probably makes it a better deal to go with B450 chipset if not interested in gen 4.

If available Asrock B550 Phantom Gaming 4/ac might be cheaper for you.

The prices is 37-40 USD lesser than the B550 gaming plus atx motherboard. Should I consider for r5 3600 and rtx 2060 (may upgrade to a 4060 later)?

I've got a B550m Aorus Pro. It's a very similar board to the Aorus Elite feature-wise but with somewhat stronger VRM. It's proven to be a very good board I like quite a bit. The Aorus Elite would be perfect for an R5 3600. It could even be a comfortable fit for an R7 5800X3d if you ever choose to upgrade for best gaming capability. Keep in mind it's a smaller mATX form factor. It will fit a full size ATX case, it's just not going to fill it up.

The B550m pro VDH is also quite good enough for a 3600 processor. I'm less fond of using it for an 8 core CPU though, mainly because of it's VRM, even though it would probably work OK for an X3d CPU.

I've got a B550m Aorus Pro. It's a very similar board to the Aorus Elite but with somewhat stronger VRM. It's proven to be a very good board I like quite a bit. The Aorus Elite would be perfect for an R5 3600. Keep in mind it's a smaller mATX form factor. It will fit a full size ATX case, it's just not going to fill it up.

The B550m pro VDH is also quite good enough for a 3600 processor.

so Aorus b550 pro atx is somewhat $40 costly in my region than the msi b550 gaming plus atx motherboard and the aorus model is out of stock on every online retail sites in my region

Most ATX cases - all the ones I've ever seen - do support fitting an mATX board so that's not surprising. It will work fine, it's mostly an aesthetic concern but ATX does offer an extra slot (usually on x1, maybe x4, bandwidth though) if ever you have need of it. Nothing functional otherwise.

Assuming you're OK the pro VDH feature set (USB ports mainly, also SATA ports and whatever else concerns you) it will work perfectly well for your R5 3600 processor choice.

I'd only want to avoid using it with a higher core count processors: 12 and 16 core CPU's are out, 8 core CPU's are iffy but the 5700X3d would probably be fine, 5800X3d possibly too. That's only a concern if you have plans on eventually upgrading the 3600 for high end gaming performance.

Like the R5 3600 it's a 6 core/12 thread processor. It would work fine for a R5 5600x...or an R5 5600X3d which is also a very good processor for gaming.

Just general advice: like update BIOS to the latest first thing. The board has a BIOS flashback feature but with a supported processor (an R5 3600 is supported out of the box) just boot straight into BIOS and update it that way before installing the OS. Download it from MSI's support web site and nowhere else.

Once updated look for a BIOS setting to disable automatic download and install of MSI's utilities and monitoring services and disable it. Gigabyte does this...I don't know about MSI. It's important to do this BEFORE installing the OS or you'll have to uninstall it and disable the monitoring services afterwords.

Only download the Windows installation package from a Microsoft web site. Nowhere else.
