I recently upgraded from a 1tb to 2tb 970 evo plus using the same heatsink and installed on the same m.2 slot as prior. The increase in temperatures has me slightly concerned because my previous drive idled around 30-35c and peaked around 60c load IIRC. My 2tb drive idles around 50-55c. I ran a benchmark with DiskMark64 and Samsung Magician and played some games, etc. to get an idea of peak thermals. HWINFO64 reveals 61c on temp1 and 72c on temp2 sensors. Should I be concerned? I understand the drive is designed to throttle past 70c, but why is this happening? Seems unusually warm compared to my previous 970 evo plus drive

Solution
Denser flash. To stay single-sided with just two NAND packages at 2TB the drive has to use 512Gb/die TLC. 2 x 16DP (16 dies per package, current maximum) x 64GiB = 2TiB. This tends to add some overhead to the controller as well. 72C for controller ("temp2") is acceptable if that's a realistic maximum for your usage.
