I need help with hard disk diagnostics.
Laptop is Toshiba Satellite A-300.
I had Win XP when problems started. Problems were:
1. Computer froze while I was on-line, had to manually shut down.
2. Turned it on - found out Chrome deleted all history and bookmarks.
3. At this moment, computer is working like this: freezing all the time, opening files lasts literally 5 hours and laptop creates repetitive noise. I want to restore system - no restore points.
4. Kingsoft antivirus is “off”, as many times as I’ve tried to turn it on.
5. Checked with Malwarebytes in safe mode. 154 viruses found.
6. After seeing that I can't save my bookmarks in any way (no bookmark file etc.), I uninstalled Chrome. Computer still freezing, slowing down and making noise.
7. Malwarebytes in normal mode. It asks for restarting computer. After restart - it looks like safe mode.
8. Trying to get out of safe mode, but after several restarts and other tries - I see that internet, video, audio is there - and figure out I am not in safe mode. Display driver doesn't work.
In this condition, I am deciding for Windows reinstall.
For the last month, I have windows 7.
Antivirus works, all drivers are there, but...
1. Computer works fine for the first week, but suspicious repetitive noise is still there. Soon it starts freezing and working painfully slow. I take it to someone who says Chrome (that he installed again while installing Win 7) is causing slowing down, because it has many processes going on. (I have a lot of extensions, tbh, but I think laptop should handle it?)
2. Uninstall of Chrome. Computer works normally for couple of days, but noise is still there. Soon it starts freezing again and it’s almost impossible to work on it.
3. I am searching for a solution on the internet. Everybody mentions HD. I decide to check.
Here are the results of several disk checks:
1. CHKDSK after restart of computer. RESULTS:
222 large files records
0 bad files records
2 EA records
41 reparse records
0 unindexed files scanned
0 unindexed files recovered
Windows replaced bad clusters in file 1664 of name Windows\recache\rc0006\ResCache.hit
Windows replaced bad clusters in file 44265 of name …bin.
Windows replaced bad clusters in file 49744 of name …et1.
Windows replaced bad clusters in file 65767 of name …bin.
Windows replaced bad clusters in file 70629 of name …png.
After this, computer turned on normally and rarely creates the odd repetitive sounds. It looks perfectly healthy - which is the only reason I’m confused right now. So I decided to do more tests. I tested with following programs:
2. HD Tune. RESULTS:
Benchmark: Read error. Test aborted.
Health status: Ok.
Error scan: Damaged blocks 0,5%
3. Hard Disk Sentinel. RESULTS:
Power On Time: 817 days, 7 hours
Estimated Remaining Lifetime: 230 days
Health: 52 % (Fair)
Performance: 100 % (Excellent)
There are 249 weak sectors found on the disk surface. They may be remapped any time in the later use of the disk. At this point, warranty replacement of the disk is not yet possible, only if the health drops further. It is recommended to examine the log of the disk regularly. All new problems found will be logged there. It is recommended to continuously monitor the hard disk status.
4. HDDScan. S.M.A.R.T. Report. RESULTS WITH WARNING:
- Current Pending Errors Count - Value: 100, Worst: 100, Raw(hex): 0000000000-00F9, Threshold: 000
- UltraDMA CRC Errors - Value: 200, Worst: 200, Raw(hex): 0000000000-0001, Threshold: 000
All my files are safe on external drive, so I can freely explore what’s happening. Do you think I need immediate replace of hard drive, considering Windows repaired some bad clusters? Or is all of this together telling you I should replace it?
