Question Is my Radeon 7950 dead? If so what to buy as a replacement?

In the last few months i started noticing that even watching videos at 720p seems to be a challenge at times for my radeon 7950, despite knowing 1080p was effortless in the past. In games occasionally i experienced a slowdown that was fixed on game restart.

Nothing i could identify as a gpu problem. Can't say i played many demanding titles.

3 days ago my computer suddenly showed me a black screen a couple times then decided to freeze. An issue that i believed i narrowed down to windows being stupid and me having to reinstall it.

I was struggling a lot with the reinstall because at times the screen just went black, i thought the usb might be problematic or bios settings or other components, but i started seeing new issues. Namely occasional visual artifacts like slightly off color few lines on screen on an even colored background, even before the windows logo had a chance to appear, sometimes even in bios. I even tried out another windows i had installed on a different hard drive for test and curiosity, and it seemed to work for like half an hour then i got hit by a black screen and a freeze. Next time i was getting screen tears, vertical lines, and big blue and black boxes, and the system froze before i could login, and stayed in this state. Of course windows wasn't installed on this system, but still an extreme reaction.

My system has a i5 3570 but for some reason if i try to use the igpu the bios gives me the processor error code. I ended up putting in my old gtx 750 and i saw no visual glitches, no crashes, and the windows installed as expected.

Funnily enough the igpu of an i3 3220 can run 720p videos without hiccups.

If my system proves to be stable, i will want to get a better video card, maybe 1650 super but i am open to recommendations. Not sure especially with new gen consoles coming out how much longevity that card has, but it could serve me until i earn some cash for a real system.

Is it really worth trying to make this radeon 7950 work? Did i miss something? I spent so much time, and frankly i was already thinking of replacing it.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

We're going to need more information. Please list your specs like so:
CPU:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU: make and model and age as well
Chassis:
OS: version

When a GPU is starting to break down, you will tend to see artifacting on less demanding tasks. If the PSU is failing to deliver power to the GPU and the rest of the system you can also artifacting or sometimes the system refuses to boot up or recognize all components connected to the motherboard.

What BIOS version are you currently on for your motherboard?

CPU: i5 3570
Motherboard: Asrock B75 pro3
Ram: 2x 4gb corsair 1600mhz,
+ I got 2 x 4gb kingston ram sitting in an idle system, but the rams seem to be mismatched and the system only saw 8/16, one kingston doesn't have an xmp profile. No luck with manual ram timing tweaks.
SSD/HDD: 2x 1tb WD Blue
+ I also have an samsung 850 evo 120gb but currently removed from the system
GPU: Radeon 7950 likely dead to the current GTX 750
PSU: Raider Ra 550, like 8 years old
Chassis: Some quality cooler master with plenty of space, i tried to find it and i couldn't
OS: Win 10
Bios: Latest

If it were me looking to replace an HD7950, I'd be looking at a 4gb GTX 960 or 970 that uses the same power connectors. They are dirt cheap on ebay. Just don't buy any of the bogus ones from China. You don't know what you're actually going to get with one of those.

Yea 970 looks possible. Currently i am more interested in a used 1060 6gb or 1070.

With a slight overclock to my cpu, it might be prove to be viable gaming pc for a year or two.
