So I've been having this problem for the past few months, and I figured I'd run it by you all to see if you wonderful people could help me. This past summer I upgraded my GPU from a 5 year old Radeon 7770HD GHz Edition, to a EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 TI. I also upgraded my processor (and motherboard) to a Ryzen 5 1600.
I've been having terrible framerate issues since I've installed these upgrades, and I've just lived with it, but I'd like to find out once and for all if it's a problem with my setup, or if it's just that my graphics card isn't powerful enough.
I play the video game "Rust", and average around 30-40 fps, never peaking above 50. Everyone that I talk to says that a 1050ti SHOULD be able to play Rust at 1080p at a smooth 60fps. I looked at a lot of different reasons why this could be the case.
My GPU usage and CPU usage are relatively low (CPU usually ~30%, GPU usually ~50%). Oddly enough, I get low fps on all settings. Changing the settings has little to no effect on framerate (I actually get slightly higher fps when playing on higher settings!). I read that this is a telltale sign that the CPU is bottlnecking the GPU. While that makes sense, I find that hard to believe, as the Ryzen 5 1600 should be capable enough to handle whatever a 1050ti throws at it. I'm also confident that the CPU was installed properly, and has thermal paste to ensure that it doesn't get too hot.
Attached are a few screenshots that I took of HWMonitor while running Rust. The first screenshot is on LOWEST settings, second is on MEDIUM settings, and third is on HIGHEST settings.
In summary: Is there really a CPU bottleneck, is there a problem with my system? Lowering graphics settings has little to no effect on fps, and this happens across most games that I play. Is it really just that my graphics card isn't powerful enough? Sad that my 5 year old GPU could run this game better then a new (more expensive) GPU can.... Thanks for reading and thanks for all the help!!
