Is nobody at least rooting for AMD?

Naahh ... you keep posting stuff like that so we can have a giggle Darth.

Some of us have both types of system here ... so the technlogy is more of interest ... not the sticky label from the box.

I can't think that far ahead ... if it runs as well as Penryn then AMD might survive.

I think the 2s and up environment will be fine for AMD but unless I am mistaken then the desktop crown for gaming will stay where it is - I saw the Tigerton links today ... not bad.

But the difference may be slight ... we could do with shorter posts too.

Mr T's lengthy essays are worth reading tho I hope his last isn't prophecy ... lol

In the server world we have alot to thank AMD for. Long gone are the stupidly high prices for fast multi-cpu 64bit propriatry boxes.

If AMD had not come to market with dual core quad socket 64bit x86, I'd been currently having to justify spending £100,000+ for an Itanium/Power/Sparc processor based system.
Now I can come to the table with a £40,000 system with much better single threaded performance as well as keeping up with the above system in terms of users I can stick on the system. I can employ cheaper system administrators, because I can use Windows Server (quite a price premium for Unix admins).
Implementation times are shorter, because it's just quicker to get a windows box up and running compared to Unix.
I used to be a complete Unix advocate, and still like some of its features, but the reality these days is that windows server is just as stable, easier to administer and the hardware is cheaper.

Yes, AMD has done a great deal of good for mircoprocessor manufacturing, acrross the board in server, mobile and desktop. Everyone including the blind fanboys on both sides of the fence have much to be greatful to AMD for. It would be a horrible shame if they go under because of the false pride and questionable management of a few execs.

you got that right...

AMD really needs a better executive team. At this rate, AMD will inevitably BK by next year, if nothing is done to improve executives' incompetence.

I hope so. However, the volume approach will only work if they can't make a profit on what they're selling in China. China is a great market. A lot of the market isn't going to care about performance, they're just going to want something that can get on the Internet, email, and that kind of stuff. AMD clearly has way more low-end options than Intel, however, I think those low-end options are some of the least profitable for them.

Profit...is profit.

It will probably make little difference to AMD whether they sell 1 million $100 cpus or 2 million $50 cpus as long as they acquire the same end profit.

According to ebay strategy...it might actually be beneficial for the the cheaper ones to sell long....because of the shipping profit. (kidding)

But in AMD's case:

Loss is Loss

It will probably make little difference to AMD whether they sell 1 million $100 cpus or 2 million $50 cpus as long as they acquire the same end loss.

Remember, AMD loses money everytime it sells a CPU.

There's no point in rooting for anyone. If AMD goes under, someone else comes in and competes with Intel because there's profit to be made. That's simple business.

im going to give amd a by this time. they have been very good to me over the years, offered me performance i wouldnt have been able to get for that money.

yeah i know penryn wil probably be faster than phenom, but im going to buy AMD anyways this time. a good will gesture. after that its on and ill get whatever is best.

TC....I am not exactly sure AMD is losing money, however indications are that the margin in very thin. I am certain that there are more transactions occuring than meets the casual eye.

It may have been a large error to purchase ATI, however...there might be something in R&D, not yet made public, which may turn the tables more than just a bit. Speculation to be sure....however it is not outside of reason.

In some industries large start-up costs preserve monopolies. This may be one of those.

I understand where you were coming from. If all things were equal product-wise, I would buy AMD to promote competition.

However, I believe BaronMatrix is forming a charity to give money to AMD, donations acccepted by paypal.

intel will always be better then AMD at performance but it will never go down man... EVER. Put it this way... Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 scores around 2100s in 3DMark06 and costs like 230 but AMD FX 6000+ gets 2300s and it's 170 dollars... with those prices it's no competition. AMD will just keep following Intel but sell it for cheaper. The lines of battle are clearly drawn ATI was first but always been weaker and cheaper then NVIDIA. AMD and Intel is the same thing. Since ATI bought AMD and Intel might as well as owned by NVIDIA. Let the performance vs marketing battle begin...

i want both companies to be about equal so we can get competition, better products and then in turn lower prices. However with the upcoming current AMD processors, i really hope they win so that they can make some of the money back that they lost in their depression that is called conroe

LOL, well put.

2H of 2008 is going to be CRITICAL for AMD. If AMD can turn a profit (any amount), even if it's only in 2Q of 2008, that's a great thing. It would show they are competitive and getting back to being healthy.

However, if Barcelona can't break AMD out of the shadow of Conroe performance, it might be good night for AMD.

I know that Michigan had a rough start, but try being in the shoes of a Syracuse University fan, I'm ashamed.

Otherwise, though, I'm also rooting for AMD to be cutting edge and competative.

I have read it and....
No...you are only sure they are reporting a loss.
The top level staff are still flying around in private jets.
The employees still draw a fine paycheck.
The accountants still manipulate the reports.
The company still produces millions of CPUs.
The partners are still backing them financially.
