Is nobody at least rooting for AMD?

I don't wish to start a flame war, but it's funny when you see hard facts come out that totally dispell what the fanboys say.

Onestar Fanboy Fact: AMD isn't losing money
Reality: AMD Lost nearly 400 million in the most recent quarter, which only covers 3 months. That means that AMD is losing nearly FOUR AND A HALF MILLION DOLLARS A DAY.
 
Alot of us/you don't think about the research costs that go into making a product, the material costs and the marketing. I'm no fan of Intel or AMD, but in many ways I think that all of the processors should be about the same price. It doesn't cost Intel much more to squirt out an Extreme Quad Core than it does to produce a single core P4. The materials aren't much different is what I'm saying and so what we're really paying for is the research, and because of that I only look at price/efficiency, not just price/performance. If either company makes a product that's just as fast at the last version but uses half the power, then I'm all set. I just don't think that they can do that consistently without a performance increase and in my opinion that's really all that AMD has been trying to do. I don't blame them and in alot of ways I hope they get their crap together because I'm tired of paying $500 for a CPU just to have it turn into $250 4 months down the road. Although that's how tech is I just don't think it'd be that way if there was better competition. If AMD would start to be more competitive we'd at least see a price drop from Intel and probably one from the Nvidia side of things too. AMD's financial situation is their own fault just like any other business, you can't blame Intel for making a kick butt product that sells like hot cakes. We all know that in the past few year it's been the other way around so maybe it's the natural way of life to balance things out like this.

I know one thing and it's that when you're on top you have to make an effort to stay that way or someone will take your place, and it just doesn't seem like AMD is really trying to be top dog. Which tells me that they only want to do what they want to do and that they don't care much about their customers.

I hate Intel/AMD/Nvidia/ATI/........fans. If a product is great then you should get it, if it sucks then don't get it at the same time you shouldn't complain for being an idiot and buying junk. Just think that whatever you buy will be outdated in a year no matter what, so don't worry about who it's made by, just make sure that you buy a quality product for what you are going to do with it. There's no point in buying an 8800GTX to only play around with MS Paint, and there's no point in getting an x1300pro to play Crysis on Vista. So get what you need and be reasonable and stop caring so much about who it's made by, and start caring about product quality.

Basically what I'm saying is that I ROOT FOR AMD, but only so Intel will drop their prices. Yeah woohoo.

TC...we have been all through this tired old rediculous tirade. There was a point when you and I agreed to disagree with no flames. What happened? Did some evil wind fan an ember that required you to launch a vendetta? Please do not post an imagined fact such as: "Onestar Fanboy Fact: AMD isn't losing money " when that is not exactly what I said. I said that "I am not sure that AMD is losing money." To my way of thinking, ...it really does not matter to me what AMD is claiming as loss, even if you think it does.
 
I live and work in Phoenix AZ, not far from the Intel fab in Chandler where they make core 2's.
Intel are laying people off and the company I work for are hiring, so I've had plenty of opportunity to talk with ex-Intel engineers lately. They have no love for Intel after being laid off, trust me, but more than one has said that Intel have far superior tech. and could blow away AMD any time they wanted, but they allow AMD to exist only so that Intel appear to have some competition to avoid law suits for being a monopoly.

Niz...I have heard similar reports from individuals who are in a position to know. One generally respected individual told me that Intel has 5 generations of CPUs outlined, designed, and that can be manufactured at any given time. Various technological advances may tweak a design here and there over time, however the technology that the average consumer pays for is outdated and archaic by several generations compared to what could be produced at any given time.

When I see Intel and AMD both generating incremental advances with price schemes to match, it reminds me of the economic realities within which we must interact.
 


No problem at all, and yes there is a great deal of misinformation. I wonder at times, if some of the spread of false information is not the work of individuals ar even a group of individuals with a market agenda. Pure research requires funding and funding requires a sponsor....ad nauseum.
 


Well, see, that's a big issue with me too. My previous post was somewhat smartass in nature because of that very fact. A lot of people that grab on to the counter culture product, whether it's AMD or Linux or whatever, talk about it in such a smug way that you want to see the product fail just so they'll STFU. My point being, just be honest.

Admit that Linux may be cool, but it's not replacing Windows. Admit that AMD may be a great value, but Intel is making the better product. Admit that your hybrid may be helping in some small way, but unless you get your electricity from hydroelectric or coal or nuclear, you're still burning oil to charge the freakin batteries.
 
"Better" is a subjective term.

Intel processors are (at this point in time) architecturally inferior to AMDs. They are only "better" in synthetic benchmarks which focus on SSE and integer calculations. Intel has the advantage of a large R&D and fab capacity making it easier for them to mass produce processors in quantity. They don't really care about innovation like AMD does.

It took AMD to kick Intel's complacency and actually advance the x86 architecture. If this didn't happen, we'd all be running overpriced netburst CPUs or some variation of Intel's VLIW Titanicum (Itanium).

AMD is fine
EA posted losses the last two quarters too. are they going under?
2nd place is often 2nd place because they will not play dirty pool.
and just because the 'bought' justice dept. of the U-S-of-A-Hole dismisses the anti-trust suit doesnt mean it was never legit. the us govt is the mob, they will destroy or protect anyone for enough cash.
 
Gezzz the last time I was on here was, almost 3 yrs. ago, AMD was the king. Guys, if AMD would go under, your next processor upgrade will cost you some bucks. When intel was the only processor company years ago, the average price for a mid line processor was $800.00.
Lets hope that never happens. AMD right now is giving low income people a chance to have a good computer build at a low cost. You guys think that this is all AMD does is sell computer processors to the public. It's a very small part of their business, just like intel. You need to stop by the AMD and intel corporate sites and learn where the money is really made. The public stuff is a drop in the bucket. See what these company's do for children's hospitals and burn centers nation wide. The kind of equipment they donate for cancer research. That's why I don't flame either company. It's all in what you can afford at the time of the upgrade.
 


EA posted losses, but they are not 3 billion in debt. AMD is.

And please provide proof that Justice Department was "bought", before you make such statement.

Why does THGF have so many n00bs flamming companies, governments, and each other?
