So I'm debating between the RTX 2060 SUPER and the RX 5700XT as my GPU for my new PC. From what I've seen online, the 5700XT gives you better frames. However, the 2060 SUPER does have Ray Tracing, but I know it isn't that big of a thing as of now. That being said, does the Ray Tracing on the 2060 SUPER and whatever potential it has to expand across more games make up for the better frames on the 5700XT?

Note: My monitor I'm planning to get supports both G-Sync and Freesync 2, so that isn't a deciding factor.

Enabling RTX almost halfs your fps. I dont personally think 2060S is worth it, if you really want the ray tracing eye candy you should just save up and get 2080 and up to get an actual good experience.

But of course, if you dont mind playing at 45-80fps (RayTracing enabled) you should go for 2060S if you can handle lower framerates without it bothering your gaming experience.
Also the drivers are much more stable on Nvidias side.

I would go with RX 5700 XT if you can handle the possible issues with the drivers and dont really care about raytracing since the 5700xt offers a little more firepower than the 2060S
I actually own that specific 5700 XT and its been great for me. Its probably the best MSRP 5700 XT you can buy.

Couple questions:

  1. What CPU do you pair it with? I'm planning on pairing it with the Ryzen 5 3600, so would there be any bottlenecking there?
  2. Do you use it at 1080p or 1440p, and what is your average fps for the games you play?

Welp, now I'm stuck lol. Let me put it this way, is there a NOTICEABLE difference in the frames between the 5700XT and the 2060S?

btw: I am planning to game in 1440p.

With no Ray Tracing the 5700 XT is about 5-8% faster than 2060Super. This is a difference, but not that significant. If you use Ray Tracing in games with the 2060Super the fps will go down even more. But wit the 5700XT you wouldn't even have the possibility to use it.

R5 3600 is a good choice, I'm on an i7 9700KF. You cant really go wrong if you stick to current gen Ryzen 5 or better. If you wanted to go Intel I'd stick with a i7 9700K/KF or i9 9900K/KF. I don't think the i5 9600K is worth it, because Ryzen is just better at that price point.

RX 5700 XT is a great GPU for the price. So if you feel like that is what you want don't hesitate.

Yeah I'm locked in on the 5700xt. Do you use yours at 1080p or 1440p, and what fps do you usually get?

I play at 1080 and I get 144 plus of basically everything I play. I do limit my frames to that but if I let it run wide open depending on the game it gets even higher. But it’s capable of doing the same at 1440 as well.

If you target is 1440p with 100fps than even the 5700XT will not handle many new games in Ultra or Very High Settings. I have an overclocked RTX 2080 and I play 1440p all the time. I usually crank video settings on Ultra and only lower settings if I can't reach an average of 60fps. But in many newer games I am not even getting close to 100fps (RDR2, GTA5 on highest settings with 4xmsaa+txaa it averages at around 75fps, Kingdom Come Deliverance, AC:Odyssey).

Other games are not a problem. 100fps I reach in ultra settings with SOTTR, FarCry5, Witcher 3, CoD Moder Warfare 2019,

Games that I can play with Ray Tracing in 1440p in Utra Settings and still of 60+ in average without using DLSS: SOTTR, Metro Exodus, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Battlefield V. But I admit, that would get harder with the 2060super in a 1440p resolution. But that card should handle 1080p raytracing just fine.

I mainly play games like COD, Rocket League, Fortnite, etc. so I think I can run 1440p at around 100fps. I'm fine with high settings, personally.

Actually, Ray Tracing runs surprisingly good in COD Modern Warfare, in that game you might even get pretty good fps with the 2060Super. they did the shadows with it and it looks definitely better. Again, its your own preference and ray tracing right now is a nice to have and not a must have. Just keep in mind that raytracing will blow up as soon PS5 and Xbox series X will hit the market.

For esports titles like that the 5700 XT will do fine at 1440P

COD = 105fps
OW = 116
Rocket= over 200
Fortnite= 100

This is all on ultra so if you lower the settings you'll get easily into the 120-144 range. The 2060S will not be far behind but like i said before, for my money i want the most frames.

As far as ray tracing for those competitive titles its kind of in limbo. I don't see ray tracing becoming common place in competitive multiplayer games for at least another year or 2. Its barely in any single player titles and i believe that is where it will blow up first, where frames and frame times are not so important.
