I read conflicting reports on whether the SB83G is quiet or noisy. I
would appreciate anyone who owns it share their experience.

I notice the heatsink on the northbridge (Intel 915) comes with a fan,
whereas the heatsink on the 915G on the SB81P is fanless. Is it safe to
replace the 915 heatsink with zalman NB47-J or NB32-J?

Mel,

I just got one last week and it isn't as quiet as it is made out to be.
My Dell at work is quieter. The fan does have several settings and I
was able to get it quieter than the way it came by having the fan set
to ultra low until it reaches a high temp, in which case it will speed
up to its highest setting.

I'm not a gamer. I do desktop pub mostly and some graphic design. I
went for the nice looks and chose the SB83G5 because it came with a
free LCD monitor at the time. The Zen looked interesting but the ATI
9100 chipset is lousy at managing memory and is slow compared to intel
in bus transfers (usb2 and firewire -both of which I use a lot) The ATI
chipset has other strengths.

If you truly want quiet, the SB83G5 isn't the cube for you. It's not an
obnoxious sound but you do hear the fan running and there is no
mistaking it.
