Is Socket AM2 compatible for 939 pin cpu?

The 939 cpu will physicaly fit in th 940 socket, and vice versa, except the cpu WILL NOT WORK EVER AGAIN if you put it in the wrong socket.

Think of it as trying to get a square through a circle principle. (david Coulthard's chin is exempt from this).

Well, you might be able to physically get a AM2 chip into a 939 socket, but it won't work. AMD has alternated from 940 to 939 to AM2 with a 940 pattern but different internals. If nothing else, a tap with a hammer would make it fit, but then it still wouldn't work. Besides the pin difference, there's also the matter of the different memory controller.

did a search... didn't find the answer right away... (mebbe based upon my search criteria) so I asked the question again because I needed a prompt reply.

So, thanks for the prompt reply, and I promise I won't ask it again 😀

lol!

He'd do even worse if he had to wear a cuboid helmet!

You are seriously joking aren't you...

Aren't you.......

OMG George Bush has come on Tomshardware..........

Someone get a tissue quick...

actually pauldh, was talking about how ASrock, had a motherbaord that could use an adapter board that would allow an AM2 processor and DDR2 memory [i think] to be used with a socket 939 ASrock motherboard.

But you still cannot fit an AM2 on a 939, and expect it to work.......... :non:

The stock socket 939 cooler fits the AM2 socket.

When did AMD start using Zalmans for their stock coolers? I remember when AM2 came out, people were upset that AMD changed the mounting for their sockets. S939 uses two screws, while AM2 uses four. The heatsinks might be the same, but you need different mounting hardware. You can't just take a stock S939 cooler and put it on an AM2 board.

If it did, AMD would not be in the dire straits where they are now: third place in a two man race.

According to this thread, the socket 939 heatsink will fit on the AM2 socket.

But he never posted back with success. I don't think he should use that HSF anyways, there is a difference in heat output in a 3700+, and a dual core 4200+.

As you can clearly see, the mounting bracket is different. If they changed the bracket, I'm sure they changed it so that you can't mount the 939 heatsink on the AM2 bracket.

The single tab clip mechanism makes it compatible with both socket AM2 and socket 939 processor heatsink retention frames.

On the other hand, it might be possible... I would love to look this up more, but I do need to get ready for work.

Just in case you missed it I will repeat it in as many languages I can think of:

Nein - German
Nyet - Russian
No! - the vast majority of languages.
bop-a-pop-a-bugalooo - Some weird tribal language

So to sum this up, No. AM2 cannot and will not ever have intercourse with a S939. It just wont happen.

That's the funniest sh!t I've seen in a while!

^Agreed.
