Is The Corsair CX Series Bad?

Hello! So I have recently purchased a Corsair CX500M power supply for my new system. It will be powering an overclocked AMD XFX Radeon R9 270X graphics card and an Intel Pentium G3258 processor. Recently though I stumbled upon a thread on overclock.net (link below) telling me why I shouldn't buy a Corsair CX series PSU for my gaming pc. This person says it is "mediocre" and "you should buy something better if you building a gaming and/overclocking rig", so I'm fairly confused because I've heard great things about this power supply and a lot of people have it. I have already had the power supply shipped to me and it would be a pain to return it, but if it's such a bad PSU is it worth it? Thanks for your input.

It depends on how much power your system will draw at stock settings, and how much you want to overclock. Because they are built with cheap parts, they have less tolerance to higher heat, and higher heat is what will kill the PSU faster.

can't really say how long before it fails, just have to ride it out.
They are cheap. You get what you pay for. Willl they work? Yes. Will you have any problems, probably not. Some people are just anal.

You will be just fine with it, if you have already ordered it don't worry about it.

Solution
As others mentioned before, due to its cheap internal components it's very likely to fail earlier than other products within the same price range, so from that point of view there's no reason at all to buy the CX series.

Better to invest in a better unit around the same price than having to deal with issues unexpectedly.

You do not need a 750w one you can go with less wattage than 550w even. If you want a 750w one here is one:

Okay thanks, I plan on upgrading to a 780 and an i5 soon thats why I wanted a 750 watt psu.
 


I looked at a different forum and people are saying the 780 isn't that bad considering you can get it around $200 is you buy used so I'll most likely get one. And the total wattage I would have with all my components is 473, thats without an overclcokedGPU so I'm pretty sure I'm getting something more than 550 watt.

 


Okay, I understand your reasoning that an i7 & a gtx 980 runs fine on 550w psu but the 780 is a series behind. The 700 series doesn't have as low as a wattage as the 900 series, the 780 takes 250 watts.
